Frank, at 5' 6" my fit is way different than yours, but I found the S bars too far away, not so much too low.
The Stelvio is a much more comfortable seating position, but I'm not yet convinced it is more comfortable overall after a long day. After a couple 600 mile days, I was tired which is not the case with the S. The BMW feels less comfortable, but works so good overall I think it may be a wash. Although the Stelvio handles really good for that type of bike, no way does it match the S with Wilburs. Parts drag and it just doesnt feel as tight. No suprise really, but I don't think it could match the S even with upgraded suspension. I really like the Stelvio, but I'm keeping the S as it is still the best overall bike I have owned. If the price is right, you won't regret the Stelvio either.
Thanks,
Doyle

Hi Doyle,
I am interested in what you thought of the Stelvio?
As I have and opportunity to pick one up a the right price.
I have done 175,000 kms on my 1100S with the low bars but plan
to move them above the triple clamp, this weekend too.
I thought that the Stelvio would give me a more comfortable riding position but
my S now has Wilbers suspension and feels damn fine to ride, if a little cramped
due to my 6 foot 3 inch height.
Cheers,
Frank
