Check the engine bay for emissions stickers; those will tell the displacement of the engine that was originally in the car. (For a 70-72 914, the 1.7 was the only option.)

The engine serial number (in front of the oil breather or on a boss on top of the right rear of the crankcase) will tell you what engine was originally built on that crankcase. If it starts with W, EA, or EB it was a 1.7, EC was a 1.8, GA or GB or GC was a 2.0; other letters are VW applications.

You can check to see if the cylinder heads have only three studs that hold the intakes on; the 2.0 heads have three and the others all have four.

But you can build any displacement 914 engine on any 914 crankcase, and heads are swappable, so if you want to be absolutely certain of the displacement, you will have to pop the heads off...

    Hi Dave

Is there any way to eliminate the pesky "Wanna be Your Friend" notification that I perpetually have?
