I haven't converted to a long hood, so I never followed through with anything other than my "drawing." I'd make it out of 16 guage steel and put a shallow crease in the handle part for strength. If you have any questions on how I'd go about building my solution, ask away.
Just found an old post about your turbo-look question. I have the same situation with my 1984 wide-body cab. All original documentation is gone from the original owner but found a good resource in Norbert Franz with Turbolook-Register - Startseite. He noted a 'z' code on my option sticker and traced the code to a 'special wishes' designation where a chassis was pulled from the line and sent to Werk 1 for modification. No factory documentation exists today, but it does give a clue as to why we have non-491 codes on our cars.
