2011 Mini Clubman (base) - VVT Solenoid or Cam sensor

Hi there. I have a 2011 Mini Cooper clubman with 42k miles on it. Ever so often it throws up the CEL. When I check for the codes it always says ‘poo15 - b camshaft position - timing over-retarded’ ‘bank 1’

In looking at various websites and videos online I am not sure it it requires replacing the
A) camshaft position sensor
B) VVT solenoid . Which one ? The one closest to the cabin looks like a pain to get out. The one toward the front of the car seems more Accessible, but is that the problem ?

Thanks

You can get the rear one out with a 3/8 ranch and a shorty extension. It helps if you pull the PCV hose loose from the valve cover and move it out of the way. I would pull the both and inspect the screens to see if there is any debris. Hopefully you aren’t on the mini service plan and doing 15k oil changes?

Same problem

I had the same code on my Clubman base. One thing you can do first is exchange the camshaft pos. Sensors and see if the codes change. They are easy to do.
The same can be done with the vvt units. You can clean them when they are out.
If all this doesn’t fix it you can buy aftermarket units, like I did, and I haven’t had any problems since.
A good scan tool is helpful in seeing codes and resetting when you have made a change.
There are suggestions to use Seafoam in the crankcase just before an oil change to clean out any gunk build up if you’ve gone too long between oil changes.

There is a good bit of info on You Tube videos to help.
