Air filter question 2006 JCW

Decided to do basic service on my 06' JCW - bought less than a year ago!

Going to take it to local Mini shop to change the oil because drain plug is stripped- tightened by some gorilla at a quick lube to be sure....
I don't have the patience to tackle this in this tiny apt garage...

So the air filter I got at local supply place is rectangular ... the one I have on my car is a cylinder that locks in place nicely up in the housing...

1) Is this an obsolete filter superseded by the rectangular one?? Can I delete and use
the rectangular one?

2) There is some black cylinder thingy shaped similar size to old fashion coil tucked
up in the air filter housing -
anyhow it has some tiny plastic (1.5mm) tubes that attach to it. There is NO way
to keep these attached when replacing the air filter. Are they important? Car still
runs...

TIA
