Question on 2011 clubman S left barn door

My left barn door refuses to unlatch. I know from other searches that this is a known problem and caused by failure of either the switch in the handle mechanism or by failure of the motor located inside and under the sill plate.. I have removed the plastic trim panel from inside the left rear door but still can't figure how to manually unlatch the door. there is not enough space between the bottom of the door and the plastic sill plate cover to get a screwdriver or some other tool in there to manually trip the latch. It might be possible if one could remove the plastic sill plate cover but I can't see how that would be possible without breaking the sill plate cover. Neither of the possible two failed parts can be removed or replaced without the door being open. I spoke with service advisors at all 3 Mini dealers in Michigan each of which is 2 hours away and none had ever seen a car brought in with this problem. of course they all said " bring her in and we'll take a look" but none had any clue as to how to unlatch the door. Is there a procedure for how to unlatch the left rear barn door? Dynamite is not an option.
