Mystery Cable help - 2003 R53

Hi!

I have just replaced the shifter selector lever located under the air box of my 2003 R53 mini and I have found a mystery cable that is not plugged in (see picture). I cannot figure out where it goes.

I've ruled out MAP, TMAP, coolant temperature and O2 sensors.

There are two wires going into the connector which are blue + yellow and green + violet

I'd plug into your OBDII and see if any faults are being thrown that might indicate where that connector goes. Also, maybe take a peek at this article here, possibly figure 16 that might show where it's supposed to go: MINI Cooper Performance Intake Installation | Pelican Parts DIY Maintenance Article. I'll do some more digging and see what I can find to where it might go as well. Let me know if there are any P codes present in the system.

Thanks for the OBDII tip. The code I got back was P0130, pending status, "Mass air flow or volume air flow circuit, high side." The O2 sensors are both connected. So, the mystery remains

Well, the car is back together and runs just fine without the cable attached to anything. If anyone does have a clue where it goes, I'd love to know.

For P0130, how old are your oxygen sensors? I'd first clear the code and then see if it comes back. If it does, you'll need to replace the pre-cat sensor. You'll want to make sure you use the OEM supplier one, NTK as the Bosch sensor has been known to throw codes for the pre-cat sensor. Typically, people only use a Bosch sensor for post-cat and OEM sensors for pre. DIY here: Mini R53 Oxygen Sensor Replacement | R53 Cooper (2002-2006) | Pelican Parts DIY Maintenance Article. Sensor here if needed: 2003 Mini Cooper S Hatchback - Emissions Equipment - Page 1.

As far as the cable... Are your reverse lights working? I'm wondering if it's possibly your reverse light switch that is disconnected.
