Why do you have to register R56 battery?

Why does the battery have a shorter life span if not registered? It seems a bit of a con to me?

The charging plan is adapted to the battery life and needs. It may overcharge the new battery due to the old one wearing out.

The registration has to do with age of battery as well as size. The IBS looks at charge and discharge current. The charging system adapts to the voltage, charge and discharge rate of the current battery. If you do not tell the DME that it has a new battery, the new battery can fail prematurely, due to incorrect charging map.
