r53 oil filter gasket to block replacement
 

I know generally what's involved...but..because access to the area is very tight I need to know if the axle needs to be removed or not. I know access would be better but if it doesn't need to be done I'd just as soon not. Also, if just the gasket to block needs replacing is necessary to remove the oil cooler and lines..just as soon not have to drain/refill the cooling system.

It'll be easier to replace it from the top. So, don't remove anything and do it from the bottom of the vehicle. To get to it there are only a few heat shields in the way. The only time you'll need to get under it is to remove the third bolt on the bottom of the housing that is by oil pressure switch. You wont have to remove anything, just reach by the subframe to get access to the bolt with a socket extension. You also don't have to remove the housing completely from the vehicle and can easily replace it by pulling the housing back slightly.

Thanks for the help. It's a fiddely job that would have been easier if my hands were the size of a 3 year old but it's in and hopefully fixed..haven't driven it any distance..just started it up to make sure no oil was gushing on to the floor.
