How can you determine when the rear shocks should be replaced?

if leaking, high mileage for preventive, or if the rear end has excessive bounce.

You might also hear a clunking type sound from the rear. It'll definitely be a bit more of a bump and most certainly feel like a much harsher ride. If you're replacing your shocks you'll also want to replace your shock mounts while you're in there.
