Timing Chain Replacement
Hi,
I recently bought a 2010 BMW Mini Cooper S Convertible 6-speed manual and it died on me within the first 12 hours of owning it. My local mechanic suggested that I purchase a new engine because the timing chain needs to be replaced in addition to the head gasket and 8 broken valves. I am wondering if I can just purchase the parts or do I really need to get a new engine (which would be very expensive). Second opinion please. Thanks. Giavano (Bahamas) |
The safest course of action is to replace the engine. If the bottom end is known to be in excellent condition, you may be able to get away with just a top-end rebuild and chain replacement, but you are taking a chance that there isn't more damage than is obvious, or that you are putting stress on an already-worn bottom end.
If you are going to do the work yourself, it might be worth just trying the top-end. If you are paying someone else to do the work, it likely is not worth the risk. --DD |
