Best Driving Roads in Aus

Where are the best drives in Australia?
To start with I'd like to nominate the Gorge Road/Chain of Ponds in the Adelaide Hills. Lots of tight twisty turns that lets you have fun without breaking the speed limit (almost!). The road surface is also good and the scenery will keep the wife distracted.
How about the climb from Warburton to the top of Mt Donna Buang in Victoria? Arrive at Warburton first thing in the morning, wind the windows down and blast up the mountain listening to the exhaust echoing off the trees.
What's the Putty Road in NSW like now? I haven't driven that for 20 years. How about Bells Line? Where are the good roads in QLD and WA?

Just so happens I did the Warburton to Mt Donna Buang last sunday morning. You are right it is a ripper drive.

I have done the Moorandah Hwy -> Warbuton -> Reefton -> Lake Mountain -> Marysville -> Narbethong -> Black Spur -> Healesville route several times now. It is a blast. Anyone interested in a monthly Sunday drive + coffee in Healesville?

Burnie to Hobart via Strahan and Queenstown. It's kind of like a drive in the Adelaide Hills but with better roads, better scenery and you think it'll never end.

Apparently they had a big earthquake last week which moved NZ 30cm closer to OZ. I expect the Kiwis will be asking for a discount on their airfares from now on.

Gorge Rd (SA) is right up there. (You should try it when the orad is closed- unbeleivable) Id also nominate the road into Savage River near Burnie in Tas. Also the road at Basket Range in the Adelaide Hills. The Reefton Spur in Vic is a ripper too.

Tassie wins though, great roads, little traffic.

The Illawarra Hwy (Route 48). It goes from the Princes Hwy near Albion Park Rail, just south of Wollongong NSW through Macquarie Pass which is hilly and winding, through Robertson and on to Moss Vale.

I drove this road earlier this year but the best bit was ruined by some IDIOT in a Magna who stomped on the brakes before every curve even though we were travelling up hill at 15kph or less. I wanted to turn round and go back for another go but didn't.

Another is the Oxley Hwy (route 34) from Wauchope NSW to Walcha then on to Tamworth.

I did this one a few years ago in my Legend, with the wife and kids and a boot full of crap they like to take on holidays, like clothes, shoes and other things girls like for a week away. I can only imaging how good it would be in the Porsche.

From my Excellent Adventures thread; the road from Thredbo to Khancoban is another good one!

That's not a speed advisory sign... it's a distance to go sign!!

And just look at the condition of the road; fantastic! I loved the reverberations that bounced back off the cuttings and rock walls.

Great Ocean Road From Lorne to Apollo Bay and beyond. Tight corners, good surface, one of the most spectacular coast lines in the world. Need to avoid holiday makers so early morning is best bet.

The Lion's Road up in the Border Ranges - from near Beaudesert through towards Kyogle is fabulous.

I did the Oxley Hwy and Putty Rd a couple of years back on the same day. The wife was in the passenger seat. She reckons she was seasick and nearly fell out of bed after we got home.

There's another fabulous road in Vic - the Tarrawonga Gap near Bright.

Agree. Would have been nice if they'd thrown in a few corners up here in the Territory. The often catch you by surprise because you forget they exist

Sigh. It sure used to be. Many an early morning run to Apollo Bay for breakfast at 7am, 3 or 4 - or may even 7 or 8 911s .....But its been ruined, thank the bike community who insist on killing themsleves there every Sunday. Theyve reduced the speed limit from 100 to 80, and double lined the whole road. Even "GOR" sections beyond Apollo Bay (the GOR seems to get magically longer each year. I believe it will reach Adelaide soon) are double lined, ridiculosusly. You have to break the law to overtake, almost to Warnanbool.

Its also can be a bit dangerous. i had an encounter with a bus as I lined up a right hand apex- he came came around the other way with the front overhang of the bus well out into my side of the road. I had no road and the guard rail and drop off as an option, it was close thing.

That particular section closed to the public was great fun when Porsche did the Great Ocean Road Escape a couple of years ago!
