Mechanical requirements for track work?
Hello all,
After many many years of desk bound weekends I have recently finished external university study and plan to devote some of my new found time to using my Porsches on the track. At this stage I'm interested in lower level events such as driver training and trying to beat my own time, I don't really have the budget for anything too serious. Anyhow I currently going through the 924 in particular, trying to fix up any defects and was wondering how mechanically perfect the car needs to be before being allowed on a track. My biggest concern is a smallish oil leak, everything else is in pretty good shape. The car currently leaves a oil mark about the size of a 5 cent coin. Before I get too carried away, what things do I need to ensure are sorted out before I head off to the track? At this stage I'm considering joining the Queenland Porsche club. Thanks

Hi Wayne,
Good on you for getting out onto the track - our cars are made for it. I wouldn't be concerned about a 5 cent size oil leak. I've been on track with worse. What is important though is that your car is mechanically safe. If you're not mechanically inclined I would suggest a general service at a local Porsche savvy mechanic. Brakes, fuel system, and electrical should be in good order, as problems here can get ugly in a hurry. Good brake fluid is a good idea at the same time - I run Motul 600 for a reasonably priced performance fluid. When first on track take it easy, and build your speed through the day. If you feel something awry when on track, slow down and pull in next lap - don't stay out and risk a crash from mechanical failure. Hope this helps!

The PCNSW website has a pretty good guide to car prep for Club Competition, including overview of motorkanas & supersprints. Appendix B contains a scrutineering checklist which should give you a list of car prep to undertake before heading out on the track.

Wayne, the Qld Club always welcomes new members.
Do what we all do before a track day and just degrease it the day before - a small leak is no issue anyway. The 924 class is reasonably small, so you'll be quite competitive ![]()
