What amazes me is the number of bikers who don't wear a helmet around here.

I get that it gives them more "freedom" and that's their choice but you won't catch me without one.

" My new bike (BMW S1000R) kind of scares me, but I like that."

From the beginning to this day, even as soon as I decide I'm going to out, as I decide what to wear, which gloves, firing up the machine, moving it out of the garage, etc., I get a slight case of butterflies.
I think it's from some vague anxiety laced with excitement.

No helmet law in AZ...but I always wear one for safety and comfort.
All through HS (No. Dakota) I never owned a helmet and I loved it then.
T-shirt, shorts, tennis shoes, and sunglasses.
Dumb guts.

I quit for a couple of reasons, got rear ended by a drunk and almost launched into oncoming traffic and shortly after that my mentor, who was the most careful rider ever, hit marbles went into a ditch. Head hit the culvert, wearing a FF helmet, dead.

Decided then 4 wheels, strapped in and a bit of metal around me was a better plan.

The saying “whether you think you should, or think you shouldn’t... you’re right” roughly applies here too. If you ride long enough you’ll see some things and go to some funerals. It might even be your own. It’s not a completely rationale decision to ride any kind of motorcycle (or a little air cooled Porsche, for that matter).
But I am always a little surprised when someone stops riding because a close acquaintance goes down. That scenario was always there, and really should have been fully contemplated beforehand so that that risk assessment was part of the decision to ride at all in the first place. Yet that is not an uncommon reason for folks I ting why they quit bikes altogether. And the moment you think you shouldn’t ride anymore, you probably shouldn’t IMO. It should reduce anxiety, not produce it. I still ride, albeit more sanely than 30 years ago, but I’m glad my sons do not. Is that hypocritical?
RIP to both accident victims and heartfelt sympathy for the families.

Ten times the number of people die in car accidents but no one ever talks about giving up driving. Hell, everyone drives to the funeral.

My friend said, "You'd better hang on. Sit close. Grab your hands in front of him."

All of it. I was a goner.

OK........my g/f read this and texted me that it sounded gay.
His abs were under his shirt...my hands were over his shirt.

Not exactly true if you do the math, just way more cars than motorcycles.

Quote:

Per vehicle mile traveled, motorcyclists' risk of a fatal crash is 35 times greater than a passenger car. ... Motorcycle rider deaths were nearly 30 times more than drivers of other vehicles. Motorcycle riders aged below 40 are 36 times more likely to be killed than other vehicle operators of the same age.
Quote:

In 2001, motorcycles represented 2.2 percent of all registered vehicles in the United States and accounted for 0.34 percent of vehicle miles traveled, but crashes involving motorcycles accounted for 7.6 percent of total traffic fatalities on America's roadways.

I'm lucky to be alive.. Many years ago I was riding my bike down a 4 lane highway in the left/center lane and a car drifted wide in a corner and I hit them head on- right between the headlights, going @ 60ish. I was on a sport bike and I dont remember/think that I hit the car at all. I basically flew right over the top of it and went over 132 feet before I barrel rolled to a stop. No scratches, nothing broken, was just sore for a few days. I still remember it like it happened yesterday. The sights, sounds, feelings.. all of it..
I got another bike and rode for about another year or so but just had too many close calls so I sold it and concentrated on riding my dirt bikes.. Just recently sold those, and even though I do miss riding, I think it's time to let it go...

Without a doubt, they are more dangerous than cars. Physics don't lie. But I also believe strongly that your safety on a bike, (or a car), is a controllable factor. I also believe very strongly that not everyone should ride a motorcycle.

I'll continue to ride and try to stay safe. If I die doing it, I was doing something I enjoy. :)

If you really want to ride a motorcycle, your going to ride regardless of these accidents. Ive been personally involved at the scene of a lot of motorcycle accidents, Several fatalities. I still love riding motorcycles..Sometimes I think these posts are just excuses...The fact of the matter is you really don't want to ride a motorcycle....You like the idea of riding a motorcycle.....

I 100% disagree. I love riding, there's virtually nothing like it, but it's far too dangerous. As I posted earlier, I'd love to have an HD.

Between a friend of a friend getting killed and a drunk @$$ small-man complexed former Ranger trying to run me over with his car, I called it quits.

I'd only ride if it were on a track where no cars could hit me.

Fact of the matter is this, I remember hearing that there are 50-100 fender benders a day in San Antonio Texas where I used to live. Up to 150 on inclement weather days.

I, myself, was rear ended 3 times in 2 years.

Point of this is, is the 'fender' in a fender bender accident is YOUR BODY on a motorcycle!
