Jim,
How many hours was the labor? Did they itemize? Only reason I ask is they might have had a labor charge plus recovery of the old refrigerant, plus disposal of the old compressor (I think you said the compressor went bad) plus vacuum pump time, plus new refrigerant. Not defending the markup on the refrigerant, just wondering if they just took the lazy way out. $900 for a new compressor installed doesn't seem all that bad to me.

Ironic.

I knew my system was fubar on Saturday morning, I was home nursing a cold and thought I was running a fever. I checked the thermostat and it read 87° when it was set at 77°.

I shut down the system, set up the portable unit then went to my storage to get the window unit.

I then called the AC company I use and they told me they do not work weekends so I would have to wait until Monday.

I waited until Monday because they seem to be honest.

Until I saw the 1000% markup on Freon on top of the service call charge.

I paid $72 a pound for freon that costs him $5 a pound

I am all for markup to cover overhead, that is over the top and they all seem to be on the same page.

Additionally, when I put in my system 17 years ago my "friend" told me he was installing at his cost. Which was $2,400.

I was friend with his partners brother who was at odds with them at the time.

He pulled out his price sheet to show me what their cost really was. It was $800.

So they made $1600 giving me the system at cost, you know, friend prices.

Look, I am a contractor too, when these same people need surveys, I did it for free.

I drove my company truck there with my 10K+ in equipment in it, using my insurance and overhead of my office and staff to give them a survey for FREE.

When I needed an AC system what did I get? They cannot help themselves with their greed they have to rip off their friends too.

Point is, I no longer do free Surveys for anyone. I no longer use friends for my AC.

Last Friend ripped me off too. Also, his negligence cause half my house to flood and I felt bad (I have no idea why) hammering him for his mistake. I ate the 2K insurance premium and recently $900 service call because he has installed my entire system wrong.

As a small business owner I understand overhead. Not sure why everyone seems to think pointing that out is going to light a light bulb over my head.

I also know the markup for AC systems is outrageous, every friend of mine in the business is printing money and trying to figure out ways to spend it.

I want in on the scam.

I just started a new thread:

I try to do everything myself these days. I have my limitations but will continue to fight the good fight......

You probably should consider Casement Window Air Conditioners - With a little bit of searching, you can find AC units made to fit them
