So basically, it's is possible, but not easy, for a normal steel bolt. What about SS bolts? Forget about it?
Thanks again.

lots of rigging parts on sail boat masts are drilled and clipped SS
you really do NOT want them coming apart

the bit has to be harder then the work part [SS bolt]
so no big box store china junk drill sets
cobalt or ti
keep the bit from over heating go slow and let it cool recoat with wax
re-sharpen often
expect to break or burn out bits so get a bunch

Depends on what kind of stainless you are talking about. There are many.
If it's typical 300 series (316, 309L), it's soft and cuts like butter but galls easily.
If you're talking 400 series it is usually heat-treated and can be pretty darn hard.

Steel Wire-Lockable Hex Head Screws

Fully Threaded

Partially Threaded

Wire these screws together through the hole in the head to get more vibration resistance than any other screw (wire sold separately). They are made from zinc-plated Grade 5 steel that’s stronger than stainless steel and provides corrosion resistance in wet environments. Length is measured from under the head.

sammy,
ok, I got it. alright, what were you talking about?
these are way over what I can understand sammy

unclebilly,
the drill works right, clockwise . The bit is not sharpened . I got it new from homedepot and just use it as is.

Thanks everyone.

In my typically long-winded and complicated way I was just showing that fasteners with holes already drilled in the heads for locking wire are easily available and relatively cheep.

if that was what you were going for ...............

rnln 06-29-2018 01:58 PM

Actually, I am looking for a hole drill on each end, and no thread. So, look like I will have to drill, if I can/decide to do it.
Thanks Sammy

No thread? Do you mean that you need something like a hitch pin and not a bolt?

Do you have a picture of what you were trying to find?

rnln 06-29-2018 03:37 PM

Yeah something like a clevis pin with hole on both ends. I said bolt because I planned to get a long SS bolt and cut off the threaded end.

javadog 06-29-2018 04:39 PM

What are you trying to do with this thing? Got a picture, or a drawing of the design?

As I and others have mentioned, there is almost certainly a commercially available offering to suit your needs (and save you the time/aggravation of a DIY attempt).
From your revised description it sounds like you need a headless, double-ended clevis pin (AKA hydraulic cylinder pin).

wow, "double-ended clevis pin (AKA hydraulic cylinder pin". This is what I need... just need to look for the right size.
Thanks Eric.
Thanks guys.

Thanks guys,
I finally got the SS clevis pin and drill some holes with my hand drill. Lot of work. Yes, some of you were right. It doesn't worth the effort.
Thanks again.
