Tandem bike are cool and fun

So my 12 year old daughter has some odd resistance/ fear of learning to ride a bike. I saw a ratty old tandem at a local shop the other day. I asked her if she would ride it with me. She said she would.

We tried it out for size. It fit. We bought it. We rode it twice today.

Who knew that tandems were such a kick! They absolutely fly down hills and on the flats. We had just a wonderful time.

I feel like a good dad. A little sore. A little sweaty. Good times!

Cool, I've seen them many times, but never ridden one. I've always been a bit curious.

Friend converted one to a long distance road trip bike - was gonna go from alaska to florida on it, used the extra space for more panniers, etc. He ended up doign his shakedown ride (Fla to DC) and then got offered a killer job, so he ditched his idea and came back to Fla.

Tandems are a blast. Be careful on long descents if you don't have a drag brake - you can cook your rims/pads pretty quickly with the extra weight/speed.

Back in the 1970's when I was racing we bought a Motobecane tandem bike and put a lot of miles on it. When the ship I was on was in port in San Diego my wife and I rode it to work at the 32nd Street Naval Station. Did the Rosarito to Ensenada and Tecate to Ensenada bike rides half a dozen each. The note about watching speed is right on as the gut that ran the Chula Vista Schwinn bike shop crashed on the long down hill coming out of the mountains to the coast above Ensenada and slide nearly a QUARTER of a mile! He didn't break any bones but it took a year for the road rash to heal.

There is couple that ride a tandem mountain bike on the trails near me that I see fairly regularly. I don't know how they do it.

Cool!

I remember riding with my dad when I was little. I like the idea of touring on one but it would have to weigh less than the tank I remember.

My neighbor built one in the 70s my brother and i got a chance to ride it was quite fast good fun. I started building a side by side and got as far as a test ride. It works pretty well too. Believe it or not it can be ridden with one person lol I havnt finished it but the hard part is done.
