I agree

but to clarify, ive never bought a house with the idea that I would keep it until the value rises and then sell and make a profit. Im not an investor type person

My only concern has been, should I decide to move will I get my $ back out of it....in other words, not lose money on it....buying a property in a location you know well helps in this regard as i know historically, my neighborhood wont go to ***** overnight without me having plenty of warning

This is the beauty of living in a place where a $90K house is as nice as a $300K house in california...of course I dont see palm trees out my bedroom window so there are trade offs to this type of security

Parlor guitars predate (and post date) model-T fords.

I've been good this year, and I am a huge Larson fan.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1931-Larson-Brothers-Prarie-State-425-Natural-Acoustic-Parlor-Guitar-w-OHSC/274120258120?hash=item3fd2d73248:g:xDAAAOSwEP5d4an-

A little pricey, and I'm having a hard time believing the fretboard inlay is original, but perhaps:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Martin-00-28-Guitar-Mid-to-late-1800s/233733209125?hash=item366b95bc25:g:vhcAAOSwsMZfd8c e

Another nice example:

These are only asking prices, but seem to be high considering everyone who ever played them has died off and there should be no interest. They don't even have humbuckers. WTH?!? :)

I have a nice 1932 Regal "Diamond Head" that I bought and had Steve at Vintageparlorguitars replace the celluloid fretboard and put on a new bridge...

Here's a nice one on Ebay if your looking for a cool couch guitar....

^Neet! Looks to be in primo shape. Not to derail the thread- I'll reel back into this thread in a second. Darn your link- because it led me to this (I'm thinking mid- late 1800's, maybe early 1900's latest?) guitar.

Since everyone from that era is dead, I am going to make an offer for "free" and see if the seller bites. I mean, who'd want it? They're all dead. I will pay shipping of course! :D

Today, you can't give one away.

You have no lock on the truth.
Model T's were never sporty, nor were they ever associated with fun or luxury. Perhaps they were only collected due to nostalgia.
And those 15mm Tin Lizzies were all utilitarian - I'm not sure anyone thought to collect them until most had already gone to their graveyards.

The bottom line is that, at some point, all the people who like these cars will ALL be dead, on the proper timeline. The are all destined for the scrap heap. Not if, but when. 50 year, 100 years, that's just details.

You may be right - NBD if so. But you could be wrong. I'm unclear why you're so cocksure of yourself.

There are many rare stamps and coins with VERY low production numbers.
Guess what? They are worthless now. No one wants them. Demand collapsed.

Tough to have fun in a rare stamp.

Hummels used to be worth a lot of money.
Guess what? They are worthless now. No one wants them. Demand collapsed.

I'm a guy. And I'm willing to admit that the lovely women in my life change their minds about what they value myriad times per generation.

So, you go right on thinking that your PORSCHE can only forever go up in price forever because demand will forever rise since nursing homes will soon have track days. Oddly, anyone who has said this about their '67 Camaro is clearly a fool, yet "this time it's different" when it comes to your particular 911.

I haven't hear too many here arguing about future investment returns for 57 Chevy's and muscle cars.

How long do you have to wait for demand to disappear? Until you are dead. Get it?

I never saw a 356 or 550 or 718 race. I barely remember seeing 356's on the road - and I live in LA. But I'm often tempted to buy a Cabrio 356.

I've also nearly pulled the trigger on a 60's Alfa the other day. Never saw one on the road; probably too old for even my dad to have driven. And I'm not dead. Not even in a nursing home.

Mechanical watches are another dying industry. But, you're certainly entitled to your opinion. Really? It doesn't seem like it.

Just remember there will be ZERO demand for your car once your generation is dead.
"Your generation"? Are you significantly younger than the average Pelican?

I drive my 911 a few times a week.
Drive 'em while you got 'em.

Still don't get it? You will die off, slowly, one at a time. Drop by drop.
What an ugly, sour, misogynistic thing to say. How miserable are you?

And before the court jester says,
"But....but....but....what that gotta do with PORSCH"

A) The cycle never stops. Nothing is immune to time.
B) This is too complicated for you. Find a new discussion.

It's interesting how strongly you desire to burst others' bubbles. Sounds like a miserable place to live.

Still don't get it?
Generations move on....

The lesson is that younger car buyers aren’t “taking up the mantle” on the older cars.

Tell that to the denizens of 30 year old Porschephiles who flocked to the Rennsports and Luftgekühlt's I attended...

I think there just might be at least one other side of that coin...

I've got n original IBM PC. It was one of those first year computers.

Not worth anything. I bet on the wrong horse. However if I had a first year Apple computer...

never once in my life have i ever bought anything with the idea that it would go up in value someday, except for my house

I buy the things I want for whatever reason (i like it, i want it, i need it) and always buy the best quality example of whatever it is

But then again, I have never had the luxury of having so much money that I dont know what to do with it causing me to invest in items of personal property for the purpose of diversification

Have many of the things I bought increased in value? Yes definitely. But since I dont consider it an investment, what difference does it make?

For example, I collect vinyl records. Many of the records I have were bought for $1 (dollar bin) 25 years ago and they are now worth $20 to $30 each. I didnt buy them to invest and I have no intention of not listening to vinyl ever in my lifetime so they are not going to be for sale. When Im dead, my wife will either toss my 40 years worth of collecting to the curb or have another collector purchase the entire collection for pennies on the dollar and that guy will be the one who makes the money

I have always thought people who bought beenie babies, or other such trash that had no real interest to them, as an investment to be, well......very strange with no real interests in life

My opinion is different if you are in fact in the business of collecting stuff you are not interested in because you know it to be appreciating in value.....like the American Pickers guys and other antique dealer types i know. Thats totally different and I understand that

This!

I don't ever buy some THING thinking it will be a great investment. I bought my 911 because I fell in love with air cooled 911s back in the 1960s when I saw the first one.

I CHOSE to by a Carrera because it is modern enough for me to drive to any paved road in the lower 48 and comfort, yet a fun toy I can take to the track and scrub off that excess rubber on the tires and have the most fun possible in a car that I can have with my clothes on.

The simple fact that it is way over doubled in value is just a bonus. It is not going t be sold until I can no longer drive it.

The same thing goes for my house. It is paid for, and not for sale for any reasonable price. I plan to live here until they take me out on a gurney or a wheelchair. My heirs can deal with selling it. My will is made, but I plan to live forever. So far so good. ;)

I agree with a lot of what sugarwood claimed, but have a few points to add. Our cultural advancement seems to be coming to a standstill for some people.

For other blocks of the masses listening to "wet puzzy" is a fine enough entertainment. But I think we are talking about the upper classes which lead the way in determining what is considered valuable and what is not. As soon as someone wins the lottery they go out and buy whatever they view as "valuable" (i.e. Ferrari's and jewelry).

Everything has been tried already and people get bored and start digging through the past for inspiration. For the last decade or so Hollywood has been making only spin-offs of classics because it doesn't have a single new original idea. Look at all the stolen Indian drum beats turned into electronica rave music. Look at the cookie-cutter auto designs. Everything looks the same these days.

Meanwhile new generations will always rebel against the last and want to be origina. Sometimes that involves digging out the grandparent's classics and making them new again.

ramonesfreak 03-19-2021 11:23 AM

yup. look at the "vinyl resurgence" going on. I laugh when people tell me they discovered such and such a record store (thats been there 40 years) and bought a new record and they cant believe you can still get them. Im like huh? A week hasnt gone by since 1980 that I havent gone to a record store and bought a vinyl record. There have been down times, and times are particularly good right now considering what has become available...but it was always there for those that were interested and wanted it.

Most people are just not interested. And thats ok too I guess.

People either get it, or they dont. I have many friends (all around 50 YO) that once had big music collections and donated all of it because they just dont want to own anything physical anymore and they really dont give a dang about sound quality or the expensive fancy gear

But now it seems the younger generation is discovering that there are fun things to do in life that they hadnt considered or had shrugged off as old fashion...

Does that mean there will be an accordion craze someday? i doubt it

it is true that when guys like this are gone, they are probably gone for good..but it all depends on the subject matter....Model T vs air cooled 911 is probably about the same as accordion vs guitar...the air cooled 911 and the guitar are not going anywhere for a long time

Used record prices are through the roof. I have many records I purchased over the years worth several hundred dollars a piece. Helps to a be a punk and metal fan I suppose since a lot of those valuable records were never pressed in large quantities.

ramonesfreak 03-19-2021 11:47 AM

if anyone thinks that their vacuum tube collection is obsolete or useless, please PM me and ill give you my address

Everyone said tubes would go extinct

nope - vintage is very hot and tons being made still, hopefully forever
