Cleaning cedar siding...any suggestions?

What's on there that you want to remove?

I owned a waterfront cedar sided house for three years prior to moving to the farm. I mention waterfront because that environment was really hard on the cedar and I had to do yearly upkeep.

Complete love hate relationship: Loved the look, hated the maintenance. I used the techniques in the video below, although with a hose attachment for applying cleaners, etc. and a low pressure sprayer.

I used a hand held pump sprayer like the one below to apply the stain.

Lots of ladder time!

Wet-n-Forget is good for reducing mildew.
Takes a few weeks to work but the clumps will dry up and be easier to remove.

Be very careful w/the power washer. Maybe get an electric one 1200psi for on-demand?

In a large Hudson sprayer add: 3quarts Warm water, one quart bleach, 1/3 cup TSP, 3/4 cup tide.
Spray on the siding to remove dirt and mildew. Power wash. After letting the Cedar dry for a day or two I Use the product Sikkens. Stain in the color of choice. Then two coats of Sikkens Cetol 23 plus. It's a clear top coating that lasts up to seven years. After seven years all that's needed is a light power wash and one top coat of the Cetol and your good for another seven years. The Sikkens is pricey and can be hard to find in California. I go to Reno to get it.

From what I've read, the cedar siding has turned dark due to black mold, etc. It's not one of my houses and I'm almost certain even a low pressure washer will be nixed by the owner...

Seems like oxegenated bleach is touted by many as an agent to assist with the manual labor necessary (scrubbing) if you choose to do it the old fashioned hard way....

I will offer that as a suggestion....making sure I don't get sucked in on the labor part ;).

The best attachment ever for pressure washers is the "surface cleaner" linked below. Meant for sidewalks, but works extremely well on siding. It cleans evenly, rather than leaving streaks .. and the job is done in one-quarter the time.
