It's NASTYCAR season!
Oh joy!
Just turned on Speed TV and after a decent Winter's worth of *real* programming, they're back to NASTYCAR. 99% NASTYCAR. Just think....10 months of turning left, left, left, left. And idiot commentators like Larry Mc Renolds and D. Waltrip. I'm pulling the plug on this $hit!

Doug,
It was tough being spoiled by a few weeks of European Touring Car, British Touring Car, Aussie V-8, Japanese Touring Car, Daytona 24 Hour, Isle of Man time trials..... Now they don't even show the WRC until at least a week after it's over. They suck, Jeff |

You guys in the US get Australian V8 Supercar racing?
It's almost a motorhead religion here! Watch the Australian F1 coverage (early March) for pre-race entertainment of 3 heats of V8 Supercars and the debut of the awesome looking Ford BA Falcon. Maybe it'll have the 5.4 DOHC 32-valve V8 in it by then!

Adam,
My girlfriend and I have spent many of the past Saturdays seeing if anyone could knock Mark Skaife and Holden off of the podium. It's a great series to watch. We did get the races quite awhile after they had been run, but not knowing the results made them like a "new" race for us. The Queensland 500 and the other couple long races were great. Maybe the new Falcon will finally give Ford some more wins. The "Green-Eyed Monster" was close a couple times. Jeff |

Just curious....
Have any of you actually been to a NASCAR race? And please, spare us the " Not if I were dragged by wild horses" comments.

I cant believe they are waiting a whole week now to air the WRC events. That just kills me, im too weak to hold out and not go the site to see who won.

Dignan,
Yeah, it's tough to wait. It's also a bummer you get one less hour of coverage than last year. If you look at the forum on the Speed Channel website you can read a long thread where they proposed showing the WRC a week later. Someone fron the network asked if this was a good idea, hundreds of people responded "NO", but they did it anyway. Guess it shows where Fox has its priorities... Jeff |

Yeah, they delay WRC coverage for a week, but can air the 1991 Daytona 500 twice a day (wouldn't want to miss that). Seriously, do even the die hard NASCAR fans care about the `91 Daytona 500? The NASCAR coverage is getting completely out of hand.
The following is a list of programs on Speed Channel that aired recently ON THE SAME DAY: NASCAR "Tech." Auto Racing (NASCAR practice) NASCAR "Classics" (`91 Daytona 500) NASCAR "Past Champions" NASCAR "Totally NASCAR" NASCAR "Inside Winston Cup" NASCAR "Trackside" Give me a ****** break!!!!! Oh, and Don- No, I haven't been to a NASCAR race. I am smart enough to know better.

Ok, lets see. I know lots of people dislike NASCAR. “Who the hell can’t do that? Left, left, floor it, brake, left, left, floor it” you get the idea.
I, however, love it. I grew up near Bristol. I don’t need to say what state but I’m pretty sure most folks have heard of it. NECKCAR and NHRA were all around me as a kid. Hell, I even worked at the track when I got old enough. It’s hard to deny the popularity of this driving sport. It’s going nuts and each year I say “Wow! They’re racing all over the country these days and it keeps growing. Cool.” I think the answer is that the team members and drivers are all fan favorites and are mostly regular schmoes with which anyone could have a conversation. I met Darrell Waltrip when I was 9 and he was a rookie. I still remember how stoked I was. While in the Navy, a buddy was sent a Talledaga race on video and the crew loved it. Well, most of the crew. After the Navy, I met Rusty Wallace during an appearance at a Food City, I think, and we talked for a while about lots of stuff. Nice guy. Guys and gals all over the country have been building their own racecars for years. On Friday and Saturday nights, they go out on a dirt track and race, crash, win, fight, lose, fail and sadly, some lose their lives. They do it because they love it. Then on Sunday they watch NASTYCAR and feel a connection. Paul, my uncle, was a huge CRAPCAR fan and he hated Dale Earnhardt with a passion. He passed away in ’97 and when Earnhardt died at Daytona, one of the first things some of my family talked about was “I wonder what Paul would have said.” I think he would have been sad. My point? Not sure. I just like it. And I don’t sit and watch the entire race, uninterrupted. That would be boring.

I have to admit that I used to enjoy it before it became so big, but now soccer moms are driving around with #3's in thier minivan windows and it seems that they are cramming the whole series down our throats.
Plus, I finally realized that I prefer motorsports that dont inspire most of thier fans to put a picture of calving pissing on another cars # in the rear window of thier 4x4. Can you imagine an F1 fan with Calvin pissing on the Ferrari?

Hey Dave, that's a good point. I think we could all do better with less 'pissing Calvin' stickers.
Oh, Darrell Waltrip has led the first 35 laps.

Matt,
I think you just answered your own question. Gotta love Nascar its a fans sport. You wont see anybody here pull over to let another team member win. That's not racing. Why would you watch a sport just to see someone lie down and let someone else win. I like all forms of racing but that makes me sick. Gotta go race is about to start back up.

Obviously NASCAR is incredibly good at marketing the NASCAR product. Dont tell me its just a good ole boy mentality.
Have you ever seen the size of the bleachers at NHIS or Watkins Glen?, If those bleachers impress you what did you think the first time you towed your p-car through the tunnel at Pocono? Those stands at pocono are HUGE!!, and no they dont fill up to watch sports car racing. Nascar like the NFL markets its product incredibly well. 30 cars doing 200mph bumper to bumper...... its really quite amazing. If any one of us on this BBS is as talented as a mid level NASCAR driver, we would be making 6 figures and DRIVING A CAR FOR A LIVING..... Instead of doing the things we do now..
