Mini schnauzer has cancer...

8 years old. Osteosarcoma in the roof of the mouth toward the rear/central. Vet says he has 3-6 months most likely. Still perfectly healthy and has no idea what's happening inside his own mouth. At least he'll get to enjoy the summer but damn really didn't think this would happen. Figured at least 3-5 more years with him. Anyone else with a doggo who had something like this???

Very sorry to hear, cancer sucks.

My paralyzed dog was very lethargic one morning and didn’t want to walk very far- he loved to walk, so this was very strange. He had water therapy at the vet, so I asked them to check him out, they found low blood cell count, and some blood pooling in his abdomen. They had the ultrasound doctor come in and he found innumerable small tumors.

Vet gave us pain pills and said he had less than a month, turned out to be just a week. Happened right before Thanksgiving, so I had four days off from work with him and he rallied back probably due to the pills and we got several good walks and fun in before the pain got to him and he couldn’t sleep and was confused why. Very sad, I think about him almost everyday.

No I have not, but did live with multiple pets (souls) to the end. It is a difficult transition...you have my sympathy. Our Scout (Maltipoo) is getting up there and I feel has a few good years left. Thanks for the reminder to spoil him a bit more than normal this weekend.

So sorry to hear that. My lab got cancer when she was 14. Vet said the treatment would be hell on her so he kept her comfortable with meds until it was time to put her down.

My moms dog was 6, had a cancer grow in his upper gum line near the rear left side of his mouth. He went about 5 months from noticing it until she took him in for his final vet visit. Copper was a great dog. Sorry to hear of this happening to your family.
This was the day before copper went to the rainbow bridge.

Osteosarcoma took my Tibetan Terrier at the age of 10...after a year or so of Kemo ($4,700) for Lymphosarcoma. Vets said the two were unrelated and that he'd bleed to death if they tried to operate.
A few minutes after I had him put down at our home, I looked into his mouth and saw the lump on the roof of his mouth.
It looked gnarly like a wart and about the size of half of a golf ball.

BTW, I later read many articles about the contamination of canned dog food as related to canine cancer.
Never bought the product again.

Sorry to hear about your pup , make the most of the time you have left with him . Extra dog treats each day is a must Just don't let him suffer , you will know when it's time to have him cross the rainbow bridge . Good luck .

Sorry to hear that. Keep him happy and spend a lot of time with him. Sucks that he’s so young. My pup is also sick but she’s almost 15yrs old so that makes it more tolerable- we’ve been battling various issues for several years now -Cushings, ruptured spinal disc (now repaired) and congestive heart failure- she sleeps most of the time now. It’s going to be tough for you but time heals all wounds.

Yes. Lump by his heart. Huge and inoperable.
He went downhill from active to unable to walk in about 3 weeks.
Killed me to put him to sleep. Especially as we had to euthanize his playmate a month before.

The only saving grace was he was old - we had him 10 years and he was adult when we got him - and we adopted both from the pound. Took over a year, but we built up to getting another adoptee. Still miss that dog though. My sympathies.

Update:

Have an appointment with the university of Guelph. They specialize in oncology. Hoping to get some insights on the stage, whether it has spread, and if we have some options. If it hasn't spread, surgery maybe an option. A partial maxillofacial removal could give him good quality of life for overall year. We shall see...

our rescue dog, not sure what type or how old though probably about 8, has a brain tumor a little bigger than a golf ball on her head above her right eye. x-rays 5 months ago showed bone erosion in nasal passage. vet said not much could be done and nearest chemo center is 3 hours away at cornell university. decided to do nothing. trying to keep her happy and fulfilled with her little pleasures. so far she is acting normal

Listen to and watch the dog...they can't talk but they can show pain and aurally give clues. They also want to please so they may mask outward signs of pain. We are going through this now with a 14 year-old Heeler, rescue dog.

We lost one of our Schnauzers last year. Lymphoma. Vet gave her a few weeks. She lasted 3 months. I told the vet that she seemed to be normal (eating, playing, etc.). right up to the last week or so. He said 'she doesn't know she's sick' Saddest thing I ever heard.

We adopted a 4-year old Schnauzer earlier this year and it has helped with the loss tremendously. There may be another dog out there that needs your help ....

I had to say goodbye to Zeke a few months ago. He was almost 14 and was having enlarged prostate issues. The meds didn't help, he got x-ray'd, and turned out his insides were full of cancer. He was starting to suffer, so it ended that day. It broke my heart to see him rest his head on my arm for the last time, but it was the right thing. He had a good run, sharing his life with two to four housemates, always being the most excited one at mealtime.

I've thought about what's better- them going first or myself. I choose them because I don't want to think about what kind of live they'll have after I'm gone. I want to know they're loved and cared for the way I do it and never know different. I'll pay for that with the pain of them going first.
