Exhaust tick tick tick - 73 Jeep commando

73 Jeep Commando with the AMC 258 inline 6.

Car runs very well for the most part. However, when cruising then letting off the gas, a tick-tick-tick sounds starts coming from the exhaust. Not sure if its a hole, or bad exhaust valves? Any idea where to start?

Exhaust gaskets. Replace em, get the exhaust hot and re-tighten em. And go with OEM...aftermarket gaskets are notorious for leaking (ticking).

If the hole/leak isnt obvious I've had good luck moving a rag or glove around the manifold and listening for a change in sound. Sometimes you can feel the leak right away with the rag.

Get under it and look for any carbon buildup at the exhaust joints and at the manifold. If there's a leak you'll typically find a bit of black carbon buildup to point you in the right direction.

Yep, my ‘66 Mustang did that too when I needed to replace the exhaust manifold gasket.

A little relieved nobody thinks its exhaust valves. I plan on replacing the exhaust anyway. And no issue on putting it off, just like to get things fixed.

Stick a small diameter hose in your ear and pass the end around the manifold.
