Moving Companies

My bro-in-law is moving from Columbia,SC to Maine for work and needs a reputable moving company. Any recent experiences or suggestions?

Thanks!

All I've found are high priced 'real professionals' and low priced scammers who quote one price then add on 'extras'....I hate moving.

I've read articles about many, many folks that quote a certain price, but then hold your stuff for ransom with a radically different price once you get to your destination. Good luck!

Moved from CA to OR back in '08.
I had the same bad experience with moving companies.
Fed up with all the lies and deception, I contacted two retired guys on CL whose enclosed truck was too small.
I rented a huge U Haul truck and trailer for a car and we all headed out.
They met me at my Portland storage facility an hr. or so after I did.
I paid their overnight hotel bill.
1/3 the lowest moving co. price.

Rent a UHaul. Pay movers in SC to move stuff into the UHaul. Drive it to ME. Pay another mover in ME to unload it. No ransom, no scams, no 'detours', and all your stuff makes it there. If he can't drive the truck himself, surely there's a family member that would do it for a small fee.

On his dime or the companies?

Moving is a roast, by who pays matters.

When we last moved, we used PODS. I paid 2 men and a truck to load the heavy stuff on the pod. I moved the boxes on the POD as I packed and then had it shipped to the next city. It was very easy and the cost was excellent compared to movers.

My employer paid to move me to Georgia. The hired North American. The crew was excellent.

When I moved back to IL, I hired North American. Turns out the "A" crews get the corporate gigs during the summer and during the winter they get to keep working. It was during the summer, and they subcontracted to Allied, who assigned me a "D" crew. My strong advice is that if you are paying for your own move don't do it during the summer when the individual customers get the crap crews.

I always did my own using a u-haul and paid friends to help load and unload. My inlaws hired a local family owned moving company to move them from up north. That company sub'd the job out and a truck with a crew that spoke virtually no English showed up. Their possessions arrived minus a few items of value...
I like the POD idea-no changing the price after the fact, no "misplaced" valuables.

An ex g/f moved from the SF Bay Area to W. Virginia using a moving company.
Somewhere along the line they parked the trailer on a street in an industrial area for several days in some city.
Broken into and all was stolen.
She lost some prized Scandinavian furniture for which she paid highly...as well as tons of jewelry that she bought all over the world.
Took her almost a year to get reimbursed sixty cents on the dollar.
Obviously, she was fit to be tied.

How very convenient that they just left it parked there for "who knows who" to know there was valuable furniture in it to steal...

She sent me a photo of the trailer with its rear doors wide open.
You could see warehouses along the street.
Damn fools.

An added note: For the PODS you place a lock of your choosing on the POD and you keep the key or combo. They don't have access to your belongings.

His employer is covering the cost. My experience has been that ultimately the driver and crew are what make the experience regardless of what name is on the truck. We used one of the bigger names to move from Chicago to New York and it was “ok”. For that kind of dough, I was expecting “great”.
