Truck Radio Problem
 

My 2007 Chevy Silverado has developed a weird problem that has gotten worse over time. A few years ago, I noticed that certain AM radio stations that had previously come in fine sometimes were getting faint with a lot of white noise. These were stations that broadcasted from far away, so I didn't take much notice.

Fast forward a few years, and most of the time no AM radio stations come in. They seem to come in fine during the winter, but the hotter it is, the fewer stations come in and the more white noise there is. Sometimes I hit a bump and they come in loud and clear and then fade out. Sometimes they randomly fade in and out. The radio is on the whole time. FM stations come in fine. These radio stations come in fine in my other vehicles.

I pulled the radio and saw no obvious problems. Nothing seemed loose. It seems like the antenna might have a short, but how do I tell that? Is there something else I should check?

If there's a windshield imbedded antenna, there is usually an signal amplifier involved. At least that's the way Porsche used to do it. I would check the connections to and from that first. Then maybe plug in a temporary aerial style antenna for test purposes. Just a thought.--Dave

I would buy a cheap antenna and plug it into the radio...see if that solved the issue.

Grounding issue, poor signal, water got into a crack somewhere, lots of possible causes, all coming down to no signal. Unfortunately tracking it down will take continuity testing the whole system, in sections.

Or do this. If you have an external antenna it should be easy to find a drop in replacement.

No AM = no antenna.

Fred, that was the issue. Why the hell did they put an extra connector in the 4-foot run of cable? At least it was pretty easy to get to.
