Videotaping minor procedures

I do a fair number of minor surgical procedures in the office. From time to time, people ask if they can record the procedure. I figure, it is their foot, why not. I guess there is potentially some downside to it, but I generally tell them yes.

What do y'all think?

I vote no. Ask your insurance company if they approve.

Dr. Sandra Lee (aka Dr. Pimple Popper)

Dermatologist.

Started recording and posting procedures.

Has over 4,000,000 subscribers to her channel now.

Probably makes more off youtube than her practice.

I would think there might be some sort of liability issues with that but if it were me I would check with your attorney or insurance carrier to see what the "rules" are. Might be like a husband video taping the berth of their child?

I have a couple videos, one of the MRI of my brain when I had my mini stroke and another that was taken by the hospital of my quad bypass surgery. They took the videos and I had to ask for them.

The doc wouldn't let me have a copy of my colonoscopy video, but did give me some screen shots so I could prove I wasn't full of 5hit.

your insurer would probably say you cannot allow it.

I believe we all make mistakes but I will not validate your poor choices and/or perversions and subsidize the results your actions.

I’d guess your insurer would always say no, but I wouldn’t ask them. I’d read your contract. In my experience asking your insurer anything just costs you more money (or risks them dropping you).

Consider having a video waiver drafted and put an indemnity in there. No one reads agreements.

Took my daughter in to Kaiser Roseville yesterday for a minor procedure on her foot. When asked, Kaiser doc said have at it, no problem.
My daughter is fascinated by the stuff and the doc was very encouraging and patient, answered all her questions.

Make sure you don't go "Oops!" during the procedure if you allow it....

I asked my cardio surgeon if I could have a vid of my quad by-pass.
With a strange look in his eye, he said, "Oh, you don't want to see that!"
I said, "OK'.
.
Found out later he was right...I'd probably not want to watch such a gruesome procedure.

Seems like a great way for others to critique your every move and ignore your results.

Why not? A friend of mine asked if I wanted to watch the video of his knee replacement a few years ago. I politely declined. Of course I'd ask about potential liability before you did it.

People are so lawsuit happy these days. I would think the requests are so they have "proof". Maybe all doctors need to wear a body-cam like the LEOs.
