Caller ID spoofing is all the rage these days. You may even get a call "coming from" your number.

Dude, you're killing me. I was afraid that Mrs WD was Anne and she was posting to tell us that something had happened to you. Thank goodness.

LEAKYSEALS951 07-25-2018 05:45 PM

That's my wife (Anne), she has been on a real anti Elon Musk rant right now as we speak. Something about musk being a "douche" as per her exact words "And, yes, you can post that all over the internet with your pelican friends...." (something like that)

I was typing that in real time as she spoke it.....

I keep encouraging her to join the anti Elon Musk group here on ppot, and to chime into parf, as I think it would be a good fit. I am sorry she is harrassing you personally, as she really needs to jump into things firsthand.

It was so much more fun when they had actual people call.

MBAtarga 07-25-2018 08:10 PM

I get calls from Rachel, with "card services"....

cabmandone 07-26-2018 08:05 AM

UGH! I get at least two calls a day like that. I have AT&T for wireless provider. On my Galaxy S9 there was a handy little thing that once activated tells me what calls are from telemarketers. I answered a few just to make sure it worked right and I figured if it was a customer, they'd leave a voicemail.

GH85Carrera 07-26-2018 08:15 AM

Without any doubt the worst offenders are not telemarketers, but the politicians running for office. The day before the last election I was getting 20 phone calls per day on my land line. Yea, we still have one, only because my wife insists, and it is a OOMA line so only $3.95 per month.

I don NOT answer any call on my land line unless it is some of our older friends (yea even older than us) that still think the land line is the best way to contact us.

Until the citizen all rise up and demand a change in the laws, the telemarketers lobby will keep the politicians bribed and keep the calls coming.

cabmandone 07-26-2018 08:17 AM

If I'm not mistaken, politicians were exempted from the Do Not Call list.

Yea, of course they exempt themselves from the law. The do not call list is a joke, but until once again the people demand that congress pass no law that does not apply to them, and no law that applies to congress and not citizens it will continue.

That will happen right after peace in the middle east, and the Russians and Chinese adopt democracy.

Install app "Mr Number". It reduced my volume of scam calls from several a day to a couple a week.

Cooper911SC 07-27-2018 11:05 PM

I hear from Rachel at the “win a car sweepstakes”... plus others. On both my cell and land line.

I appreciate the Scam Likely notice that shows up on the cell. I just don’t answer or Decline.

Got this one from Russia the other day.

That’s interesting. I get a few soliciting calls from numbers that match my area code and prefix. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a legit call that does.

Thank you. I'm fine.
I listened to Ann(e)'s spiel all the way through. I guess I should have the first time. At the very end of a fairly long monologue she said if I wanted to be put on her "do not call" list all I had to to was press 2. With some trepidation, and the knowledge that I may never hear from Ann(e) again, I pressed 2. That was 2 days ago and I haven't gotten a call since. I kinda miss her. She had a nice voice.

It's the new normal...used to be, outside your area code was the "clue"... now we don't even have that :(. Damn glad I'm not in rhe position where I need to answer calls I don't recognize...I just don't. It's the proverbial snowball methinks...but I only get a fraction from say a decade ago (including election years)....my snowball has virtually melted :). My mom...just HAS to answer, and will break her neck to pick up before the third ring....old habits. Where did the "practice" of answering after the second ring originate? Mom won't answer after the first ring....and will wait with her hand on it...always struck me as funny.

Back in the days before cell phones one of my friends that lived a few miles away from me had my exact phone number except the last digit was one number higher. This was when rotary phones were still common. I was at his house, and he got a phone call, answered it and said, no you have the wrong number, but he is here. My mom called me but misdialed my number. I was at the phone number she had misdialed.

And when you do get a legit call, you have to play if off as a marketer and make your legitimate caller leave a message.

Rodsrsr 07-28-2018 11:42 AM

Geez guys, just block the number. For android user just go to your phone log, click on the number, hit details and click block number in the lower right corner. Takes about 2 seconds.

"Gosh Ann, so glad you called. You know what? I'm actually looking for someone who wants a great deal on a Genmar Marine with only a few miles on it. It's practically brand new despite being a few years old and I can get you a great deal on financing as well. I happen to practically be in the business. All I need is a few details from you. So let's go ahead with your full name please to begin."
