Morehead city, NC beach front hotel recommendations?

Anyone familiar with the area who can recommend a place? The Windjammer seems nice online. I need a break from the dogs for a week or two. Must be beachfront.

Hey Dennis,

No beach front hotels in Morehead city. It is on the mainland side of the sound. There is a nice hotel on the Morehead city water front called the Bask. Not great but nice. It is the only hotel/motel on the Morehead water front. In order to get beach front you need to go to Atlantic Beach which is the barrier Island in front of Morehead City. There is Radio Island and Beaufort as well. Radio Island has a condo tell and Beaufort is a small water front fishing village with a few small hotels and B&B's. If you provide some details I can provide a better recommendation.

Edit: never mind I re-read your OP. There aren't all that many hotels/motels. Windjammer is nice. Right next door is a Double Tree which is very nice and probably among the nicest you will find as far as hotel/resorts. The old part of Atlantic Beach is to the left on Fort Macon Rd. after you come over the 20th st. bridge. They are old skool motels somewhat honky tonk with fishing piers. There are quite a few condominiums that rent on the island. I would check VRBO or air B&B.

When I was in college we'd play beach football on Atlantic beach with the Marines stationed nearby...good times! As a kid...Emerald Isle was a frequent fishing village area for us..another Pelcan lives there I do believe.

My family has gone to Emerald Isle for a week every year since 1987. We always rent a house.

There at beach front hotels mentioned above in Atlantic Beach.

I will send some recommendations from my laptop from my hotel tomorrow.

I am not sure what "experience" you are looking for, but for great beaches and fewer folks around you, I would suggest going further south to either Holden Beach / Ocean Isle Beach, NC, or Litchfield Beach, SC. I can't recommend Atlantic beach / Emerald Isle as my daughter's best friend lost her husband there 3 weeks ago to a Riptide.

There are a few hotels at OIB. They are both pretty much the same. We would occasionally stay at the Ocean Isle Inn on business in the area. It is a classic, old school beach hotel. It is NOT a Hilton or Marriott.

In Litchfield, you can stay in the old Litchfield Inn. It is about 60 years old and has gone through numerous renovations. I have not stayed there in sometime, but if you want waterfront, you will be hard pressed to find better. Litchfield By The Sea properties is a large, newer resort. Lots of different options there.

In all cases, VRBO can find room/condos/houses in these areas. From memory, "High season" rates continues through about September 8th.

Listen to Hal

If you're at all inclined to fish...go down to the dock in Morehead, and hook on with any of the charters going out...it's the real deal and same as it ever was....I assume. The boats that take out six (4 seats)...some are always looking for another....too hot right now though...imo. Mo' better all the way around (beaches)...after the crazies leave for the summer...early Sept.

Dennis, there is very little beachfront lodging in this area. We stayed at the Island Inn last fall in Atlantic Beach and it is an old school motel type place, nice rooms and pool. The whole area is residential and lots of older small cottages, etc. The motel is a 3 very short block walk down to the beach. It is on the beach side of the highway which makes it easy. We checked out the Bask, kind of a modern soulless place, not to much to rave about, but it's on the waterfront in Morehead City. This whole area is one of the few left on the Atlantic coast that hasn't been ruined by heavy development, like a time-warp to the past. Check out the "Sanitary Restaurant" (yes that's the name) It is a good place, been there forever and right on the waterfront in Morehead City.

Yep . Remembered this thread...

Be careful on the beaches if you're not familiar with NC conditions....rip currents. Panic causes deaths...and the currents are bad right now. Four people have drowned at Emerald Isle in the past week...be careful out there, and just heed the local advice.

We have been going to EI since the 80’s, you need to be intelligent if you go out.

I’m heading that way now as a matter of fact, I’ve noticed the currents are worse at certain parts of the beach too, meaning which end of EI we stay on.
