I've been living with a grade 3 for 30+ years, if it doesn't become arthritic there's no issue.

My gf got mugged 4/30/17 and was diagnosed with an AC joint separation. The ortho that looked at her shoulder said she can live with it, or go for surgery. The surgery is mostly for cosmetic reasons, and my gf is very looks conscious. She did the surgery and is having problems to this day.

From what the doctors told me, the AC joint is brittle. If you fall hard on your shoulder, the tendon will tear. It will look like this.

this

also, go to the doctor

I did my R one tripping over a poorly marked handicapped ramp a few months ago walking the dogs. My understanding is the surgery is to remove the end of your collarbone, not something that is typically repaired. A bit of a pisser, kept the chassis pristine for over 50 years, then blow up a ball joint that can't be replaced, damn

greglepore 07-28-2018 04:08 PM

Yeah, the surgery is, as my ortho buddy jokes, just one good whack with an ostetome to shorten the clavicle by an inch.

A good read for you.

Neato, but a Gigli saw would maybe be a better choice

That's quite the instrument, isn't it?

Changed my mind, I'm never going to the doctor.

Okay, here is one for the docs.

I crashed my bike (bicycle) on Monday. Riding to work, a block from my house, took a freshly paved corner and didn't see the sand that the construction crew had carefully spread on the surface. Front wheel washed out and I went down hard on my right side and slid. Couldn't get up right away, eventually unbuckled my backpack, pushed the bike off me, got on my hands and knees and slowly stood up. Bloody rashes on right calf, hip, waist, ribcage, forearm, upper arm/side of shoulder; gloves torn up; sand in my kit, wounds, backpack; right shoulder hurt and was hard to move right arm or lift with right hand. But nothing seemed broken.

My experience in these things is that unless something is broken, you have to get back on the bike and keep riding. Otherwise you stiffen up and soon can't move. So I got back on the bike and rode (slowly) to work and home that afternoon (26 miles).

Its five days later, and the rashes are healing, but my right shoulder still hurts. I have full range of shoulder motion, although some of it is a bit painful. I can lift light things with that arm. I have been feeling the clavicle as I move my arm, and nothing seems to be disconnected or moving around in there. I've ridden to work twice more and this morning did about 10 miles with some slow climbing and descending. I can ride normally, including out of the saddle.

The only thing that bugs me is a 1 inch area on the upper surface of my shoulder, just inboard of the joint, that is painful to pressure and where I feel a subtle lump.

My sense is that this is all normal and at worst I have a bit of a hairline fracture or something, so I should just keep on doing what I'm doing and not worry about it.

Make sense?

That sounds like a separated shoulder, I got the same when I crashed hard last year,

See a bone doc for diagnosis, there are degrees of this injury. What happens is that one or more of the ligaments that connect the clavicle to the shoulder blade have snapped. The outer end of the clavicle pops up(the lump), 1st degree is when on ligament is gone 2nd degree 2(this is what I have) 3rd you are in a lot of trouble. The pain is a bone end grinding the wrong spot on the socket.

Things to do;
There are exercises that I learned in PT sessions and continue to do, aim is mostly to strengthen the rotator cuff muscles to pull the joint back into the socket, also some stretching again aim is to pull the shoulder back. The natural proclivity is for the shoulder to roll forward in a slouch.

The ligaments can't be repaired according to my Osteopath, if the strengthening doesn't work he said that he can grind the end of of the bone down to provide more clearance, guaranteed to work.

The surgeon cuts the clavicle and will use buttons and thread the joint back together with a tendon taken from your leg. On my gf, she has complications from the button. The area is very sensitive, even after 14 months. In fact, it looks like the button is pushing up through the skin, like a nodule.

This is my right shoulder. I fell 20’+ in the X-Games super pipe 12(13) years ago. Landed mostly on my shoulder, but my head took a hit too, knocking me out for a moment. As I understood it from two doctors back then, there are(were) 6 degrees of separation and I was diagnosed as having a 3rd degree separation of the ligaments connecting my clavicle to my scapula. Surgery was required If I happened to be a model or if I had problems with say to day life. I was told surgery was pretty much mandatory for anything over a 3rd degree. I went without surgery, as I am not a model and mostly get along just fine. I can no longer throw far, but that’s okay. I also can’t sleep on my right side and have to use small pillows to prop things up or I can wake up with severe burning of nerves that are bound up in internal scar tissue. My arm hangs about a 1/2” lower than my left arm. I did go skiing two months after the accident against my doctors wishes, but needed to get back in the saddle. The next season I skied the halfpipe in Mammoth to get back into that saddle, but that was my last halfpipe run. I still ski and am active, my shoulder will take hits from falls and I do end up sore for a few days, but it’s a part of my life now.

This is how it looks when twisting/contorting it.

This is when it’s hanging relaxed by my side.

It grosses most people out. Great conversation piece at bars. Most after seeing the protrusion under my shirt want to see it without my shirt, so I will pull the clshirt collar down. They are either immediately grossed out or want to touch it, then get grossed out. I would prefer to have a normal shoulder, but I am used to it now.

Tobra 07-28-2018 10:55 PM

I don't like that repair. It is clever and well designed, but there is no soft tissue between the button the outside. You can countersink a screw, that thing sits on the surface. Button on the bottom of the coracoid process does not present a problem. You need the button so it does not pull through though. I wonder how much tension would really be on it, in day to day activity.

Wait, you are not a model?

Don’t be mean. Just because I didn’t shave my chest today...

wayner 07-29-2018 06:41 AM

My advice to treatvit like a sprain means do all the things you would do with a bad sprain

-get it assessed (ice heat regiment and all that stuff they willl recommend to promote proper healing )
-follow up with physio (because our bodies compensate for weak muscles by stronger muscles taking over, and this causes long term problems )

If it sounded like I brushed mine off I did not

I treated them like a bad sprain and saw a sports medicine dr and physio

So don’t just let it go

I'm just recovering from a Grade 2 AC separation. Its been 8 weeks so far and I'm about 90% healed. Yes there is a bump but the shoulder should heal fine without surgery and as others have said surgery is only for cosmetic reasons. You'll need to do start exercising the shoulder muscles once your healed and physical therapy as soon as possible with isometrics to minimize atrophy. Not a fun injury, but I've had worse.

Hey Jyl trusting you are listening to the above posters and get some medical help. Not doing so will lead to your being more apprehensive and perhaps a harder to repair problem.

If you don't shave for a week, will you look like a wookie?
