What's whatsapp? Need Some Help, Please.

I wish to communicate with someone in Bulgaria who has whatsapp and has asked me to download it so that we can chat, etc.
Can anyone here give a tech doofus a crash course on it?
I have looked at the info online...a bit timid to move forward. What to look out for/avoid...what to do that's good, etc.
Thanks gents (and/or ladies).

I installed it on my phone recently while my wife was in Africa for work. Works easy/well. Seems to be more popular outside of the US.

So you download it and then swap phone #'s?...given that the two have never had each other's number?
Sorry. What I meant is that somehow I'll need the other person's #...or give them mine, somehow.
.
Edit: I must sound like a Mongoloid Idiot. :D

Never mind the request...found a couple of good sites For Dummies.

It is owned by Facebook. So, rest assured your entire conversation will be saved and exploited to sell you something later (best case scenario). I refuse to install it, even though I have plenty of international friends that want to connect that way. Tell them to send you an email.

I use it all the time for talking with my team outside the US. You can text or call over WiFi. Call quality is much better than over air.

Use it to talk to German females.

Love it

It’s the best call quality and fast video calling. Much better than Viber

I use it when out of the country and to talk and text to international friends. Easy to download and use.

Everyone in Latin American uses it, and I find it an easy way to talk to anyone, anywhere if either I or they are overseas.

I stopped using Whatsapp and started using Line and Wechat a few years ago. They're all pretty similar and used abroad very often.

If you and the other person have Iphones, facetime calls/video calls are free too!
