Thoughts on a WRX?

I am 30 minutesfrom pulling them trigger on a WRX.

I decided that spending $90k on an electric vehicle to save $10k/yr on fuel doesn’t make sense when I can spend $30k to save $5500/yr on fuel.

What are your thoughts on the WRX?

unclebilly 08-04-2018 07:24 AM

I should add - this will be my daily driver that I use as an appliance and pound the miles on (600 miles per week) and use as the family commuter..

1990C4S 08-04-2018 07:29 AM

This is where Matt chimes in with sage (free) advice and the rest of us nod in agreement...

I'm a Subaru fan, it's the only Japanese car I would consider.

It's a big change from a truck...which is what you had?

unclebilly 08-04-2018 07:36 AM

Yes but I’m keeping my truck. I still need it for farm use but not for daily driving.

pavulon 08-04-2018 07:38 AM

A $30k WRX could be a lot of different cars. Could you be more specific?

unclebilly 08-04-2018 07:41 AM

Brand new 2018 WRX base 6MT.

pksystems 08-04-2018 08:05 AM

If you want economy, why are you looking at a turbo subaru?

My non-turbo Forester will get better mileage.

I have a 94 Corolla station wagon that my mom gave us when she passed on. If I wanted mileage without excitement, I would drive it.

My coworker who I carpool with has a 2017. A lot of power with good gas mileage, but has had a couple issues in the less than 2 years hes had it. Nothing engine related but the throw out bearing started having issues which was replaced under warranty but they used the exact same part, and online it seems it's just a matter of time before this one fails too.

Also had a window regulator go bad but that seems rare.

Fairly rough suspension too.

pwd72s 08-04-2018 08:13 AM

Well, you make a good case against Tesla...even at 600 miles per week, the price difference will buy a lot of gas!

The older Forester's are WRX/Sti's under the bodywork. 😉

Yes the TOB issue had a TSB and there is a new part that resolved this situation that came out in late 2017.

Had 3 of them in the last 16 years. Great cars with alot of personality for a japaneses sedan.

They are econocal to own because resale is absurdly high.

I am daily driving a focus st now, which is a tiny step down from a wrx in my estimation, but you can get 8k off of msrp on one.

You give me WAY too much credit!

The WRX is great, the only nit I’ll pick is the economy car interior. Though that’s gotten better on the newer ones. My only comment is that the $30k price range is full of great cars, I would definitely do some shopping around before pulling the trigger.

unclebilly 08-04-2018 08:58 AM

I pulled the trigger.

recycled sixtie 08-04-2018 09:00 AM

There are other vehicles in that price range. I don't think it is a bad choice but seems to me a bit of a boy racer image. :)

Well congratulations unclebilly!

Bugsinrugs 08-04-2018 09:44 AM

I have an 04 wrx with 240,000 miles. No issues at all. I did do a clutch at 130,000.
Except for the car being a bit tinny and requiring supreme gas It has been a great car. I would buy another.

RANDY P 08-04-2018 10:21 AM

Watch out for the clutch. Other than that great cars. Owned a 2016.

scottmandue 08-04-2018 10:46 AM

My brother has one and loves it, pretty sure it was the replacement for his M3.

911boost 08-04-2018 06:22 PM

I had an 04 for 3 years till I. Ouldnt stand not having a 911 so I sold the WRX to buy the 964T. I I’d very well selling the Suby.

Great daily driver

masraum 08-04-2018 06:26 PM

Where are the pics? There are 2 or 3 running around my apt complex, and I think 2 of them are driven by women which i think is cool. I'm curious, but love my boxster.

Steve Carlton 08-04-2018 06:46 PM

I feel cheated out of our community decision.

Cool car!

jhynesrockmtn 08-04-2018 07:08 PM

Congrats, love my 2008 2.5xt wagon, basically the WRX version of the Outback in its day.

Bought this in 2015 so far it’s been a ton of fun. It’s my dd. Only problem was the clutch went after 13k its a wear item but they covered it. Mech told me they replaced the clutch on every new model since. They can’t seem to get it right. May be trading it in for new model. Maybe STI:). Good luck with it and let’s see the pics.

Tobra 08-05-2018 05:35 AM

Tried to talk the wife into one of those, ugliness factor killed the idea.

unclebilly 08-28-2018 08:50 PM

I picked up my WRX on Saturday and already have 1900 Kms on it. I love this car!

Rinty 08-29-2018 11:55 AM

I've had Subie's for 30 years. Great cars.

Geronimo 08-29-2018 12:54 PM

Wasn't the WRX considered a Porsche killer in Europe...

I love Subarus, they just do everything well.

sugarwood 08-29-2018 02:00 PM

Great move.
I love driving my Subaru more than my 911.
Steering is surgically precise.
It's the greatest car I have ever driven.

HardDrive 08-29-2018 04:42 PM

Can you get a good automatic in a WRX?

VincentVega 08-30-2018 06:28 AM

I wish they made a 2 dr, like the old RS. I havent tried the latest versions but I dont fit well in recent 4dr wrx's. If I fit I'd have one too, good cars stock with great potential with some modest updates.

jhynesrockmtn 08-30-2018 06:32 AM

Congrats! Love to hear now you like it after a couple of years.

Dont think so... I have an '08 WRX is use a daily, it has a 4 speed automatic. supposedly it was slightly quicker than the manual.. I think 08 was the last year for a regular auto.. I heard that you can get a CVT in a WRX, but that just doesn't make sense..

greglepore 08-30-2018 01:04 PM

Legacy GT?
