S-shaped thingy

Anyone have any clue what this is? I'm guessing its a tool for something. It was in my FIL's collection.

Appears to be a 1/2" square forged steel "S" that's about 8-10" long.

Curiously it's ground with a rounded edge on one end and a complementary ground scalloped edge on the other end.

I tried Google and came up empty. Stumped...https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5500da6131.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...054064da2c.jpg

something for a bricklayer/pointer?

Wooden boat caulking/packing tool?

It's a pipe bender. For use with copper plumbing pipes.

Without seeing the ends (on my phone), herr oberst might be right. There are different shaped tools to give different mortar joints.

I agree. Just a guess, but that sounds about right.

I'll agree with that it looks like a pipe bender but I could not find an image of something similar.

I've made my own jigs to bend things before and they sort of looked like that thing.

Good suggestions.

The brick pointing or caulking packer tool seems to make the most sense to me given the shape. One could point mortar/caulk with a concave or convex shape, if desired -- maybe use the concave grind to round over outside corners. And the matching grinds on the pointy ends would similarly allow spot touch-ups in tight places.

While I could see the use of one side as a pipe bender, it seems really awkward to setup and doesn't seem to explain the opposite grind on the other end.

I'd also wondered whether it might be some sort of "pusher" tool for use in winding wire or rope on a mandrel -- but I think the pointing/caulking tool makes more sense.

As for personal grooming -- maybe a cuticle pusher for Big Foot?

Wow! Brick jointer for the win! Good find.

brainz01 08-08-2018 10:57 AM

So yeah, apparently I have a double ended concave/convex masonry jointer (aka beading tool).

I'll probably use it as a butt scratcher.

Mystery solved.
