Custom cabinets (bathroom vanities) direct sale

So, I have this bathroom remodel looming over my head. You can't get anyone to reliably show up even for a quote, unless you do a full remodel >30k. Lowes and Home Depot offer contractor services through their "project" services - total waste of time.

I decided to just do it myself. Tile floor, 2 vanities, mirrors, new shower doors.

The main hang up now are the vanities. Many DIY friends just buy a run of the mill model, but they all are free standing, with feet and space underneath etc.

My challenge is that one vanity is in the master bathroom and it is between two walls (left and right of it), so I need a custom width vanity / top. The other is in the hallway bathroom and in the left corner, so that one should also be against the wall with back splash in the back on left hand side. I want to get quality low maintenance, non trendy vanities as in going all the way to the floor and all the way to the wall, as this may be a rental house in the future.

So, where can I order custom vanities without having to go through a contractor / installer!?

Thanks!

G

We remodeled the entire Noah house last fall. We bought dedicated bathroom vanities from a couple different online retailers. But if you have custom sizing, you can use kitchen cabinets, too. We purchased our kitchen cabinets from Cliq Studios. They offer modular sizing, and have specific bathroom vanity selections (because of difference in depth--24" vs 20"-- of the cabinet). Then you go to your fabricator for the top, and plumber to assemble the waterworks. We've been really happy with the quality of the kitchen cabinets we purchased.

Hi Noah - thanks - I checked the site, but I don't see any vanity options. Maybe I am dense?

Thanks!

If its an odd size, then you may have to get it made. If not look for cabinets that are 33-34 tall, 20-22 inch depth (finish dimensions). Kitchen cabinets are a bit too tall(sorry Noah) unless you are 6'5"

I have installed a couple of their cabinets before where clients have bought from them. They seem to be in ok quality.

Hi Jeff!

It needs to go between two walls, so if I look at the existing one, it is 54 inches wide and has some filler boards against the wall and then a custom 57" wide top. I don't think you could buy a perfectly fitting vanity and shove it in there. The vanity is in a "motel room" type layout where the vanity is in the bedroom closet area.

So, when you say "have to get it made", that's exactly my question, who is that if I don't use a contractor? Who do I ask to make me one?

Can you just please move up here?

G

Use the money you saved on contractors to get a cabinet builder to build something a notch above Home Depot/Lowes.

Kitchen cabinet builders also make vanities.

cabinet maker, finish carpenter, ect. Not hard for someone who does this stuff. And usually you will use some filler board since interior walls are never perfectly plumb.

It is an odd size but you might be able to find a 54" vanity cabinet somewhere. it wouldn't be easy but they may be out there?

Look up cabinet makers in your area. They should be able to make the thing and install it for ya and don't be shy to ask about the installation of the sink and countertop too. I find lots of contractors don't ahve the patient to do finish work so you must watch out for that.

Hey, sometime after college, I wanted to move up there to open up a wood/cabinet shop because I know people up in the bay area have good taste and are willing to pay for custom work.

On the Cliq website, pick a color, then pick a cabinet door style. Then select the "self-serve" option. That'll take you to a menu of various cabinets, and one of those tabs will be for "vanity cabinets.". They're 34.5 inches tall, and 21" deep. As in typical modular fashion, they come in widths of 3" variation. Remember that you'll still need some sort of filler board at the ends, as you can't have cabinet doors opening up against a wall. We went with Cliq because custom cabinetmakers were obviously more expensive than what we wanted to spend.

FWIW, we bought some bathroom vanities from Wayfair. But we didn't have sizing constraints that you seem to have. They were of OK (but much better than HD/Lowe's) quality. Efaucets looks like it has pretty similar stuff. We also bought a vanity from Signature Hardware, and it was of better quality; it was also slightly more expensive than Wayfair/efaucets.

There is a showroom downtown Saratoga that has a bunch of vanities.
The owner of the showroom is a general contractor and his brother is the cabinet maker.
I guess they use the vanities to get people to come in - I don't know.
They can make almost anything you want given what samples they have there.
We had them come look at a kitchen remodel and I thought they had good ideas and were comfortable to deal with. Let me know if you want contact info.

We completed a whole house renovation last year. All the bathroom vanities came from kitchen cabinet manufacturers and were semi custom, made to order. We did everything through a kitchen design center who sold many different brands of cabinets and worked with us on design. Countertops, backsplashes and side splashes were done by a stone/marble guy.

No doubt there are custom cabinet/furniture makers in your area. They will be pricey compared to off the shelf units. I have a friend that will happily make you a vanity but it will need to be shipped to you from NJ.

Listen to Noah, that's how to do it. Lowes and HD offer several levels of quality from different manufacturers who will make a vanity for you within 3" of your final desired size. They even provide finished filler strips to bring the vanity front clear to the wall. Then order a custom top. If you get some kind of stone they will come out and measure your space a make the top to fit tight against the walls.

We re-did 3 bathrooms a few years ago. All three had built in vanities that were non standard sizes. We ended up buying stand alone vanities that were slightly narrower than the open space. We then had custom counter tops made that extended to the walls on the back and sides. This is the brand/style we used.

We were able to buy from an on-line dealer for much less than local. Contractor commented that they were of high quality.

For my bathroom, I went online and found a cabinet maker about 30 miles outside of Houston since all the ones I found in the city didn't appear to actually make the cabinets. There are a few so I just read reviews and picked one that sounded good. I drove out there to make sure they actually built them there, told them what I wanted, gave them dimensions and put down a deposit. A few weeks later I picked it up and installed it myself. Then I had the counter top folks install the counter and sinks.

Shop locally for a place like this:

http://www.superiorcabinets.com/

I've used them twice to build 2 houses and sent the buyer of my last house for a full remodel. On that remodel, Lowes gave him a quote for $30,000 that was mostly pressboard. Superior cut the price in half with full hardwood. They come out and measure before the quote.

I went to this place in San Jose, they will build one for you based on your selections, maybe dimensions too. Too far for you? Our contractor pointed us there, I'm sure he got something back.

A lot of high end cabinets now start with IKEA bases.

I didn't go with Ikea on purpose. Our kitchen came with Ikea cabinetry, and I really, really, really did not like the quality. Furthermore, Ikea uses various types of particleboard, and in a bathroom--what with water and kids and showers and bathtubs--I didn't want some mini-flood to wick up the particleboard vanities and make 'em puff all out. So I picked out vanities that had plywood construction. (BTW, that ronbow stuff that matt posted about a few posts above is supposed to be pretty good quality.) Same reasoning went into my mandating plywood construction for the kitchen cabinetry. I liked the Cliq styling for our kitchen cabinets, but it wasn't what I was looking for in our bathrooms; hence my purchases from other vendors/manufacturers.

What about those Chinese granite places? We have them all over the place here, and they have quite a selection of cabinets to choose from, and they will custom cut the granite top for you.
