CYA at lower levels, protects the chlorine from dissipating in sunlight. There are diminishing returns. Trichlor puts CYA in every tablet. You raise the level with every tablet you use. In the heat/sunlight in Houston, I lose around 2-2.5 PPM of chlorine per day. So I need to START my day with adding about 2/3rds of a cup of shock (Calcium HypoChrlorite 73%) for my 24,000 gallon pool. To do this with trichlor, which take 4 days to dissolve, I need to put in about 6-8 tablets. But each tablet will raise my pool CYA by about 1 PPM! In 6 weeks, my CYA went from 30 to 70. And in Texas, we never drain our pools, except to try to get rid of CYA... If you drain the pool each year and you are only open a few months and you don't have the heat and sunlight, trichlor might work for you. Most pools are over stabilized, which means they are not being sanitized. |
