Screwed up big time.

You know the part of the warning label where it says to wear protective gloves. Well I didn't and now I'm paying the price.

My fingernails are stained the color of coffee, my skin has dried out like leather and has what looks like little bites taken out of it and it's swollen and burns something terrible.
I guess I'll be paying closer attention to the caution label from here on out.

I have vivid memories of seeing my high school biology teacher setting posts in concrete one warm weekend and making a messy job of it.

That Monday in school he had burns on his hands, arms and legs from the mortar.

That stuck with me all these years.

Was visiting relatives in Upstate NY a few weeks ago , at my mother in laws house was inspecting a hole in the side of a wooden shed . Was down on my knees getting a good look at the damage , cleared some brush/weeds/other out of the way to get a better look . Of course had shorts and a tee shirt on ................. turns out the " other " was poison ivy !!! Been itching for over a week now mostly on my arms but some on my legs ............. vile fuc&%$# weed !!!

vash 08-13-2018 06:56 AM

I hate poison ivy. It seems like I get it just looking at it.

Thanks for sharing your warning. We all need to remember to don PPE. Hope you get well soon.

In a related boneheaded event, I managed to super glue 3 fingers (two on the left hand, and one one the right) to a plastic part I was repairing yesterday. If it had been only one hand that was stuck it would have been manageable by myself and none would be the wiser, however this incident required the assistance of Mrs Brainz and some acetone. Although there was ultimately no damage to anything other than my ego, she was understandably not impressed.

Not sure what the difference was, perhaps the air or my skin was extra moist yesterday, but that superglue was way more responsive than usual. I usually cant get the stuff to cure without some extra activator. Should have been wearing gloves regardless....

When your hand swells like that it's rather serious. You might want to get the info of the label and see the doc in the box. In the meantime if might be prudent to drink a lot of water to help flush out that you have absorbed. IDK if a hand soak is in order but you might look into Epsom salt.

If you look this product up on Amazon...the very first review ends with this comment:

Please note: make sure you heed the warnings and wear safety gloves and goggles. I didn't, and managed to cause really bad burns on my hands, not realizing it was eating away my skin until too late. My next purchase was a pair of chemical resistant water proof gloves.
Don't feel so bad, Kevin....there are others out there who did the same thing....

BTW....Milt had some good comments - worth considering. Good luck with the healing process!

BTDT in the past. Now anytime I use superglue, I put on some disposable gloves. That stuff is like antiseize, you will get it on places you never intended.

Our neighbor opened a bottle of superglue with her mouth once.

It could be worse. It could have been a fireant mound.

Offered as a word of warning learned from personal experience, never use Gorilla Glue without hand protection. The result will be very dry skin that is black. Soap/water, pumice soap, olive oil, baking soda and the commonly available organic solvents will have no effect in removing it. Takes a long while to go away too. Just trying to help.
