paver base or coquina rock

wanting to build and add to my already dirt and coquina rock drive way. I don't like the big rocks in the coquina rock.
considering paver base ( also called structural fill) instead. no big rocks in it.

my coquina is hard as concrete and I want to know if the paver base will get that hard. (did rawknees hear that).

I have used what they call crushed coquina as a driveway material and it didn't have any large rocks in it - packed down very nicely. One job I used it on has been in place now for a few years and has held up very well.

I've also used paver base (concrete fines) and it works well, but does not look as nice and it did have some lumps.

I've also used materials known as 1)shell and 2) washed shell - as parking/drive/walkway alternatives and all work OK but the washed shell was more attractive by a country mile.

Not sure if this helps but hope so.

If you can post a pic, it would help. Also, what does your materials supplier offer?

have not seen any "washed shell".
if I could find coquina that does not have the larger 3/4 size rock I would use that.

I need a lot (10-13 yrds) just for my parking area. if I do the drive, which is really my neighbors I will need about 20-30 yrds.

here is a local place.

Just looked up the pics of the driveway we did with the crushed coquina.......the stuff we used looks a little more crushed than what's is pictured in the website you provided. But maybe in person it looks better - you'd have to investigate, I guess.

That's a friend of mine who has a little track machine and does stuff on the side, like this. He really comes in handy. Like I said....this driveway - 5 years later - still looks like the day we did it. This crushed coquina really holds up.

The washed shell does too...but is a little more coarse....more texture if you will.

Another project from 4 years ago - the washed shell is still holding up just fine. We used it because the contractor told us there would be some storm water running through those areas adjacent to the pool. Turned out - there never has been. But the washed shell ended up being a fantastic option for that application anyway.

Baz,

What is that enclosing the pool? Is it bug screening or glass?

Thanks,
Rutager

Good evening Rutager,

That is screening. It's called a 'pool cage'. Framing is aluminum. The technical term for the aluminum structural pieces is "extrusions".

Here's a pic from another project I did with the pool cage almost finished. This one had a new Florida room built also.

They assemble much of the sections on the ground first and them set them in place one by one in some kind of sequence that makes sense.

Yes....bugs....other critters.....plant debris....leaves, etc.....and also to keep small children from wandering into your pool when no one is around.

You guys don't have these?

^^^ I’ve never seen one in person. Only on TV.

Just about every place I have lived, there was a neighborhood pool, so no need for my own pool.

OK, got it. We never had a pool either at any place our family (or I) ever had. Seems like a lot of work to me. In my line of work...I can always use one of my client's if I want. Besides...I have a whole ocean 2 blocks away.

Thanks Baz,

No pool for me, but that screening seems like it would up the ease factor of a pool.

yea, if I could fine coquina that is crushed better I would use it, no looking back.
problem is both places I have looked at here have large rock in it. like 3/4 size.

part of my driveway has the large rock in it. even though I have cleaned it off it seems like it keeps coming up.
