Odd couple pair of spoons...........
A few weeks ago, I bought one of the Ruger 9mm takedown carbines. It can be set up to use either Glock or Ruger mags and I chose to use the Glocks. Fast forward about 2 months and, low and behold, I acquire a new Glock Model 34! It is the one that has the machined area and mounting plates for a red dot type sight and is a "long slide". It also uses the same mags that the Ruger carbine uses! So, now I have a pistol/rifle combination (both 9mm) with 6 - 17 round mags to share between them! I have already made some mods to the Ruger. I added a peep sight that mounts to the receiver rail and removed the original one that was on the rear end of the barrel assembly. This almost doubles the sight radius and puts the peep sight just in front of my eye, allowing the use of a smaller sighting hole. I also had to add a spacer between the barrel and front sight to allow proper elevation adjustment. Next, my plan is to replace the sights on the Glock with a set of night sights that use a rear peep type sight. Ok, so why all the peep sights? The answer lies in the condition of my old eyes. With regular open sights I have some trouble keeping the front sight in focus and seeing the target. With the peep type sight, I get a better depth of field, much like using a small aperture on a camera lens. Both guns will wind up being used in centerfire falling plate matches. Everything I've done and plan to do allow these guns to be used in "stock" classes. If I decide to add a red dot sight some day on either gun, they will fall into the unlimited class where all the "hot shoe" shots compete!
