Any ideas as to what kind of tree this is?
Had a water oak fall on the corner of my property. Saw a branch of some other tree wtih lots of fruit-like things on it sticking out. Any ideas?
When a fruit is broken off, the stem will leak a milky sticky sap, much like a fig does. It is not a fig tree I don't think, or at least not the kind I'm used to seeing around mom's house. The fruit doesn't weigh much. Haven't cut one open, but it is light for its size, and has a little fuzz on it like a peach, just somewhat less fuzzy. If I squish the fruit pretty good, it feels very soft inside, can't feel a big inner seed/nut. Would not "pop" when squeezed. Haven't cut one open yet. Sorta pear shaped, but has a flat and then "nippled" bottom. Leaves are somewhat citrus-y, kinda waxy on the top. Underside is lighter, veins are under, they are even lighter. Wood - even on a 1/2" thick branch - is soft, pliable, bark peels really easy when broken and torn, so I think it is a fast grower. I certainly don't recall seeing it before, but where it was is where the drunks go through the fence and I'm typically only out there in the middle of the night with a flash light and red/white and/or red/blue followed by amber emergency lights flashing. I'm in N Central Florida but I don't think it is a native... Looks like a Ficus pumila - aka Creeping Fig.
Interesting plant. It's a vine that has smaller leaves when young (close to ground level) and as it attains altitude....it forms mature branches which have larger leaves and bears 'figs', which are the fruit in your pics. They are not really edible but as it's a member of the Fig family - they are called figs anyway. This was attached to your Oak and when the Oak came down you saw this vine's mature form along with the fruit. |
Creeping fig... got plenty of it growing along 200’ of wall around my property.
I think only the Female fruits though? Baz? |
