search term for this desk hardware???
 

Dear Pelican Brain Trust:

I hate sliding keyboard trays. I'm going to build a computer desk and have no idea what to search for to buy this adjustable height, non-sliding hardware.

Any ideas??

Why do you dislike sliding trays? IS it because they slide back under the desk when you accidentally bump it?

All of them are just for storage when not in use...the keyboard belongs in your lap :)

I can't type to begin with, its useless on my lap. Mine is always on my desk.

Have you tried searching...'adjustable desktop risers' ?

I always hit my knee on them, or they are at the wrong height, or .... I can see the appeal of the design. Prefer a proper height (in relation to chair) desk and keyboard and mouse on it.

Have you thought about a fully height adjustable base? You just set your monitors at whatever height works for you, put the keyboard on the sturdy desk top and adjust the whole top including standing up if you desire.

I've never liked the trays. They are always too small or at the wrong height or something.

The desks (integrated into short cubicles) at work have huge trays similar to what's below, but probably much higher end and more bulky.

Unfortunately, what that also means is that I lose 6" of vertical knee space under the desk. I've been in 3 different desks at my current job, and each time, the first thing I do is whip out a screwdriver and remove the tray from under the desk. It only took one day and one bruised knee to figure that out.

1. Struck out at Rockler.
2. Yes, I hate it when you tap the keyboard and it slides all the way back under.
3. I need the keyboard to be markedly lower than the rest of the desk because I need to write, print etc. at normal height. (current desk is wrap around, so I can simply spin the chair and do a different task.

This is a total office re-do. I am also fitting a mouse and keyboard at my treadmill so that I can get more exercise while I am on the net. The new desk and the treadmill are right next to each other. There is also a bowflex involved ...

P.s. I think this gizmo is obsolete. If so, my current desk will become a donor. It's really a shame to destroy this desk to scavenge parts from it..

I would guess that is custom to the manufacturer.

I think you could do the same thing with some hardware from 8020 or unistrut, slides that can be locked in position?

If you are handy, as lockable slide very similar to what you have can be install to keep them from going back under the table. over the years, that's been the biggest complain. With these slides, you have to physically release the locking mechanism so it will slide into place. It takes about 1/2 second. Press the release at the end, not a small button,but a good size one so you don't have to go looking for it.

That can be easily made out of thin plywood and for the rods, use dowels.
