How do you deal with the ephemera that you've collected over the years?

Some of it is highly personal, as in artwork that I created in my yoot; some of it is historical, for instance, Goodyear ads from the 90's that show the 33 car lineup of the Indy 500 (this was back before Tony George laid waste to the series), some of it is just posters collected that harken back to my younger life, for instance ads for Klein mountain bikes when mountain bikes were in their infancy, or ski posters for equipment that's no longer on anyone's radar, or Porsche posters or old racing posters (Detroit GP, Portland Indycar race, that kind of stuff) .....

It's time to purge. What say the collective? A brutal scorched earth policy, recycle all of it; or should I try and find homes for stuff I've held onto for more than half my life?

I'm torn. I don't think about this stuff until I start going through it, and of course then I can think of a lot of reasons to hang onto everything.....

We went scorched earth.

It was surprisingly liberating. I sold a lot. Gave a lot away. Knives , shotguns. A few Pelicans even got some.

If it's really ephemera wall art maybe Craigster knows someone who could actually use it.

I had to google ephemera and it states more print like materials. I was going through the garage yesterday and I came across old camping gear that I don't use anymore such as tent heater, coleman lantern etc etc

Good to get rid of stuff that has not been used for years....

I have my share to process somehow - so good topic.

Probably go through and be very selective on what to keep. Objective - what fits into one medium size box.

The rest goes to young Porsche/sports car owners who would be able to appreciate such a vintage library for many years to come.

I don't believe in throwing this stuff away, but can understand the convenience aspect for some who wish to go that route.

I will find good homes for my collectables.

Scorched earth for me but only after I ask my kids if they want any of it.

Just cleaned out my MIL's house of all her detritus...her 2nd husband died a few years ago and the 3K square foot house was bursting with the baggage of ephemera.

Not me. There is not a thing I am sentimental about other than photos (story tellers) that I keep.

Do yourselves and your kids a favor, purge now.

I've been selling off stuff for 10 years. It's a lot of work, if you had as much crap as I did.

I think collecting stuff is something I inherited from my folks. I was just talking to my dad about this the other day. Books and magazines... so much interesting stuff. I doubt there is enough time left to read it all. If I ever sail around the world I'll have a cabin full of books, thanks dad!

That a challenging part, deciding what to get rid of.

Like Zeke, Im interested in a few old Porsche / racing posters for my shop / man cave that's in the works.

Post up some pics and what you'd like for them, I recon they will find new pelican homes.

Some things are just too nice and interesting to throw away, even if you ar done with them.

Cheers Richard

I let go of trying to save any print/ad stuff a long time ago- basically it needs to be a one-off (or something that I've never seen before) to stick around my house.

My father has really been into collecting and refurbishing in the five years since his retirement, which is a little bit worrisome. It's nice stuff, but seeing that progress has made me want to move in the other direction.

If you’ve never thought about it, touched it, used it, (in the last year) or it costs you money to store it. Dump it somehow.

It added so much stress cleaning up behind my stepdad. Eff that. Unless you need the revenge on the loved ones you leave behind. Dump it now.

Homes for it all...at least do the research and find out if some of it is valuable...you might be surprised...

You have made the investment by keeping it, so why not reap the reward what ever it may be?

Ebay is your friend...
