Thanks for the details and pics. Seems like its changed a bit since Limerock. Good point about sensory overload, I remember thinking, oh, another 935.

Things that stuck to my mind:
- The sheer grip and mind blowing corner speed of the 919 record car (and the relatively low noise - total mind job) - Seeing a Type 64 in the flesh, art - I have mroe pics of this than any other car except maybe the glorious Martini 917 - The 993 chassis made entirely of Carbon fiber, kudos on skills - I might have left a drool spot there - The Williams F1 engine of the Singer car, in person, on a pedestal just wow... Somehow this one felt just as good but less overwhelming, more low key, less food lines, perfect weather, I enjoyed it more than every other Rennsport I've been to (all save the first one) Last edited by Deschodt; 10-01-2018 at 08:14 AM.. |

I had a great time. For a change I had plenty of time away from the track to look around. I was stuck in overwhelm mode most of the time. One of the high points for me came on Saturday. While working at Start, I had a chances to meet Dr. Porsche. He was the guest Starter for one of the run groups.

Ron from the tower across the track watched the races and your station.

Mike, It was! I was working re-entry when the 919 was on track. I was surprised, even at that distance (less than 20 ft) how little noise the car makes. In comparison, the cars in group 4 (911s 2.5 liters and over) were deafening. Oh, hats off to the PCA guys. I was Point Starter for most of there sessions. Nice tight race and well behaved. Good use of mirrors and Blue Flags!

I had a great time catching up with with my friends and other Porsche enthusiasts. Couldn't meet up with everyone unfortunately, as there was so much going on.
Here's a few photos that I took. You can expect to see all the photos go up in our photo gallery soon! Hey, look who that is!

The Singer/Williams 4 cam engine - designed (I think) with Metzger's help
(Sure wish I could have heard it run!) In another booth (Sooner), an exact reproduction of the original Metzger 4 cam, built in Germany by a friend of Metzger's, with Metzger's guidance, and using original plans. They claimed there were only two ever built, that the builder of this one knows where one is, and not even the Porsche factory has one. Of course, I am just going on what I was told at RR.

Thanks for the pics and recaps. After making the first 3 RR's, I haven't been since. Will have to return one of these days.
Anybody know the history of the white #4 917/10-30 in Eric's pics? Don't ever remember seeing it anywhere or reading about it … TIA.

Sooo many 959's in one place. More than I've ever seen. I counted 14; another told me there were 20!
A Canepa project in process - creating a 959 "SC". Conversion includes a 75% increase in HP!!!

I thought this was just spectacular, just sitting alone in the hotel parking lot. I'm assuming it was a clone, but you never know when you're in Monterey. Anyone know if that's a factory color?

Porsche4life and I were at the concrete pitwall at the Start/Finish line for the 919 laps. We remarked how quiet the car was...at 190 mph!!!

Another remarkable thing was the line at the Porsche merchandise store in the infield. Were they giving away all the black/red/white jackets that everyone was wearing?! You couldn't tell who was a Porsche employee, and who was a fan in attendance.

As everyone else has said, truly a remarkable event. I think spreading it out over 4 days helped the pace a little bit, I remember last time feeing like we were trying to cram everything in, this time felt a little more low key.... of course having 1 kid in tow instead of 5 may have helped that too. 🤣
Either way, it’s astonishing seeing how much money Porsche throws at this thing. How much do you think they spent just hauling in cayennes and panameras to shuttle folks in? And did anybody notice that the PCNA acre were all wearing matching clothes, down to the tennis shoes with the 70th logo on them! |
