Rennsport Reunions - Questions about what to expect
 

With tickets and parking corral passes in hand, I’m driving up Thursday to SLO, meeting up with my brother and heading to Laguna Seca via CA 1 in a longhood 911 and a 356. Neither of us having been there before, does anyone who’s been there before have any tips, recommendations, what-not-to-miss suggestions? Obviously we’ve got the glorious racing schedule, but aside from that I’m a little short on details.

Regardless any info appreciated!

It's all pretty much right there, at the race track, but bring your walking shoes because you'll do a lot of it and it's also a lot of up and down. Wandering through the paddock was the best part for me. Sort of like getting to see behind the scenes, plus a lot of the guys I met were more than happy to show you around, what they built, etc. You will never in your life see so many Porsches, which seems like a no brainer but it's pretty crazy when you get there. It almost makes special cars seem common place. How many times have you seen a 918 out in the wild? Practically never which is why seeing 7 in a row on the infield of the race track at RR was crazy.

Since this is your first time to Laguna Seca the first thing to remember is fog. It gets foggy and wet in the mornings. Chances are we will be on a fog delay. That just means that you can walk around a little more before we start racing. Second, if you signed up for the parade laps, remember, they're parade laps. Don't embarrass me in front of my friends (corner marshals) by doing silly things on track. If you are interested in souvenirs, get there early. They sell out fast. Avoid hwy 1 as much as possible. Still a lot of road work in Monterey. Most of all, have a good time.

Stay off Hwy, Dave. Yep, Porsche overload. By end of day, you will be numb by all the rare cars there. I will see you there. I am going up with a couple guys. Hope to see you there. You wouldn't miss anything. Everything you need is with Laugana Seca

A jacket for when it's cold, suncream and a cap for when it'll fry you !
Maybe a sammich to avoid the huge food lines...
Maybe a pillow to sit comfortably under the shade of a tree at the corkscrew ?

Yes and yes, and you won't have to lug them too far if you have corral passes.
For those of us that don't, it's a fair tour to the parking lot.
Been there done that, am looking forward to doing it again this weekend.

Its not an event where you have time to sit and enjoy looking at cars and people. We are on our feet, seeing different things throughout the day. Its not like Lufkgetkuhlt at all. Maybe that X 500. Oh yeah, its that big. I suggest no ice chest and no chairs. Now, if you want to see them come hauling butt down the cork screw, then find a shady spot up that hill, sit down and enjoy. There is just too much to see. After half day, they all look the same. Last time, they lined up all the race cars on the back straight and we were allow to walk around down there to check things out. It was pretty cool.

Pack light, buy food and water at the track, get there early and spend most of the morning looking at the cars in the pits. Take 1 million pictures, because you will be able to get really, really good access to most of them.

I prefer to spectate from the inside of the track; you can get pretty close to the cars between turns three and four, and between turns four and five. There is one spot on the outside of the track near the braking point for turn five that you can get really really close, but it's too hard to describe where it is. It's also interesting to see them crest the hill in turn one, or watch them go through turn nine. I suppose if you haven't seen the corkscrew you ought to see it once, but that's not where I'd spend much time.

You will walk farther than you ever thought you would. Great shoes and socks are a must. It can be really chilly there and also stinking hot, all on the same day.

By programs and posters on the way out of the track on the first day. I would buy multiple copies of the poster. There will also be vendors there, I'm sure you'll be able to find interesting stuff to buy. If you buy early in the day, you'll regret it, so consider that ...

Porschepalooza.

The weather forecast is on the cool side so be prepared... probably layers are best. The sun can be pretty intense even this time of year.

I raced in RR IV and was there all weekend. I needed to stay near my car and trailer a lot so I did not see everything.

I attended RR V and I got around a bit more. The corral can be breathtaking with so many cars organized by type and color. It is worth a stroll for sure.

At RR V there weren't too many shady areas and it was quite warm. Hopefully this time there will be more shade structures.

At RR V, the lines for the store were epic. Really unbelievable. And items sold out in a femtosecond.

Methinks I should wear my RR IV participant shirt with a for sale sign on it. I wonder what it would fetch.

Its all about the cars and the intersection with the people. I am eager to see my friend driving his old IMSA car.

Oh and in terms of spectating, I like to sit high in the main stands or in the turn 4 stands. And of course the corkscrew is pretty epic.

Hopefully it is an enjoyable experience for all.

Do not overlook the PCA hospitality tent and the speakers. They have a fantastic line-up. Only Porsche owners gain admittance, either with PCA membership card or show your Porsche keys.

My Graphite Metallic 1987 928 S4 will be in the PCA 70 years of Porsche display on the green grass near the PCA hospitality area.

Just take it all in. The cars are all gems. At some point, you start to feel guilty about walking nonchalantly past yet another Le Mans winner (car or driver). There are typically no ropes, so you can get a close look at everything. Prowl the paddock, check out the vendors, walk through the spectator Porsche parking areas, and walk the track to watch from different corners. You'll get out of it what you put into it. But be prepared to come home and realize that you missed something or didn't fully appreciate what you saw. Almost everything is significant. We've been to all of them since 2001 and they have all been amazing. If you want a souvenir, buy early. Hats and posters have typically sold out quickly.

Oh and if you see a good looking guy walking around with a camera or two, stop me and say hello.

Yup. Also be sure you hang around the Canepa paddock right before the 917 run groups. I was standing about 10 feet from th car when they fired it up once last time, talk about an experience!!!

Be attentive if you go though Santa Barbara and especially if you take San Marcos Pass. Local LE is aware when there's a big car event up north and are waiting for you. Watch out for the tourists in rental cars too. Just saw a nice 911 in racing colors heading north this morning, guessing he was headed to Rennsport.

Just getting up there is a treat. We saw 2 going west to Paso Robles on our way up last time. They are out in force.
