Porsche is building a new "Moby Dick"

Cool. It's not exactly a 935/77. It's an homage to Moby Dick.

A longer version, but still no speech

https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/future-cars/a23496316/new-porsche-935-moby-dick-rennsport/

Quote:
At it's sixth Rennsport Reunion today, Porsche just unveiled a stunner. The new 935 is a recreation of the famous "Moby Dick" that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979. And it's not a concept—Porsche will sell 77 examples to its best customers, who will be able to track it to their heart's desire.

Sadly it's not a road car, but it's based on one, the new 911 GT2 RS. That means it has a 700-hp twin-turbo flat-six paired with a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch gearbox. There's a lot more race-car stuff inside, though, with a Cosworth digital dashboard, and driver-selectable ABS settings including a full defeat mode. The button-covered carbon-fiber steering wheel is lifted straight from the 2019 911 GT3 R race car. There's also full air conditioning, a safety roll cage, a single racing bucket seat, and a six-point safety harness. A passenger seat is available as an optional extra.

The carbon-fiber bodywork is, of course, inspired by the original 935 "Moby Dick," which means it's much longer than a regular 911 (12.6 inches longer than a GT2 RS, to be exact). There are even wheels made to evoke the aerodynamic "turbofans" used on Porsche race cars throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Presented in a classic Martini livery, it looks incredible.

"This spectacular car is a birthday present from Porsche Motorsport to fans all over the world," said Dr. Frank Walliser, head of Porsche Motorsport in a statement. "Because the car isn’t homologated, engineers and designers didn’t have to follow the usual rules and thus had freedom in the development."

Only 77 new 935s will be built, and they'll each cost €701,948 (roughly $817,000). Deliveries are set to begin next June, and owners will be given driver training to get the most out of this machine.

Mark Webber helping to announce this car at Rennsport today. Was too far from the stage to get a pic of the actual car.

Cool project! But it looks like some body panels are forced onto the modern shape. Like that guy who tried to put a 911 body on a boxster chassis. I'd rather have an aircooled chassis recreation than this ...

I love how these low volume creations are a "privilege" to buy as one of their "best customers". Totally NOT me. Even if I had the dough, I'd not do it out of principle.

Porsche is turning into Ferrari. Sell special edition cars to their best customers for a massive amount of money, enticing their best customers to keep buying expensive Porsches. This thing will likely never go down in value, so it’s an investment of sorts as well for the high net worth collector. Sadly it’s just another step away from the company that they used to be.

The original was ugly, but the eye of the beholder changes because it was successful in racing.

A remake, well, it needs to reach that same success, otherwise it will just be ugly.

If you just saw one for the first time like I did, and did not know what it was, what it had done, then it would great the eye as ugly.

You perhaps do not have that perspective because with your age and knowledge you might have first seen it dominating races.

I don't think it's targeted at anything pro. I suspect it's targeted at folks that want to take their car to a track day or DE. I assume that means if you tried to take it racing, it would be in some sort of unlimited/prototype class, but then I don't know all of the rules, so I could be WAY off.

I think this car is aimed squarely at .1% collectors. The vast majority will never see 1000 miles on their odometers. And it's basically Porsche playing catch-up to all of the new professional re-incarnations.

I give them an A for effort but it really doesn't capture the essence of the original. Overall it just doesn't work which doesn't matter one whit for the intended audience.

If I had REALLY ridiculous disposable income (think Bill Gates monopoly money type rich), I might have one, but then I'd probably have to already have a Carrera GT, 918, 935, old RSR or IROC, etc....
