I had an economics professor in college who was Cuban, got out before the purge.

He was a kind, smart, fascinating man. He inspired me to write my undergraduate thesis in economics on Cuba, pre and post Castro.

With his guidance, research and interviews with Cuban exiles there is nothing to recommend to Castro and Che other than the end of a rope.

I would love to go to Cuba and walk in those areas I read about so many years ago. I immersed myself in all things Cuban. We'll see.

It has been illegal to do so as a tourist for my entire adult life (and is now for U.S . citizens) for good reason. If i did I would use my job and likely be imprisoned...so no. But I have travelled and lived all over the world...including places where Cuba was a state sponsor of terrorism.

That said, any money that comes onto the economy does prop up the evil regime, despite the fact that you spend it in a "private" hotel or restraurant. It would have fallen decades ago if not for tourists from Canada and Europe. It is no different than when the sanctions were removed from Iran and we funneled billions to their regime that had been almost on the verge of collapse. We enabled the government by fueling the economy...and they have exported that in the form of terror across the middle east.

A long time back in what seems like another lifetime ago, I was in Cuba @ Guardalavaca. It was very nice but the food was very plain and had no problems that time with Tourista stomach.
The people were very nice and very curious about us. The hotel had bicycles and I set one up for myself and would grab water and venture out in the countryside.
Most of the labour that was being done on roads/farms/bridges was 90% by hand. The people had at that time a hard life.
There was a young man working the bar that was about to become a father for the first time and was slowly building his own home. He would by material for construction as he could afford it.
A group us had decided to do something for him and we all contributed to purchasing what baby clothing could be found in the tourist stores and pooled together about $200 US in cash.
We found out where he caught the bus home and gave him the clothing and the cash outside the resort area as we were told that it might be taken away if it was given on the property.
I still remember the look on his face and the tears in his eyes after he opened the bags and the envelope with the cash in it.
I sincerely hope that he and his family (that baby would be about 28 years old now) went on to have a good life.

Plenty of legal American tourists every day.

All Cubans receive free medical care, and Cuba also offers State of the Art medical facilities for foreigners and officials.
We met a guy at the airport, when leaving, that lived in the Bahamas, and had no
insurance.
He had done his research, and went to Havana for a hip transplant for 15,000 US, and described the facility and rehab as world class.

When you buy a bar of soap they hand you the damn bar, thats it. Although it is like traveling back in time, a bit, they have a higher literacy rate and lower infant mortality, the medical care people receive is really quite top-notch. They also produced a few baseball stars and ballerinas. So its not all bad. Cigars and Mojito's is how I got through the day, the verity of food is severely limited, seafood is for (some) tourists otherwise its an export ONLY product. We rented a car and drove around.. its sad for the people not being able to travel outside their home country or even around the island itself..so they are REALLY interested in you, they cam really only travel through your experiences. Also, everyone seems to be running some kind of hustle just to get by. Coming from Brooklyn and being nearly penniless at the time, I related.. but that can get tiring, too. It's an educational trip. Made me love America more that I had previously, even with all our faults here and ****y-government situation, I came away a patriot. Their national dish, a roasted chicken with an orange juice marinade is freaking delicious.. you just can't eat it every single day.

What about your post leads you to believe that is is legal for a U.S. citizens to vacation as a tourist in Cuba? It is not. There are ways for United States citizens to legally visit Cuba, but not as a tourist.

Duh. What does that have to do with proving that visiting Cuba as a tourist is legal? You can advertise a car that does 0-100 in 8 sec....but, going 100 mph is illegal on most roads.

This is what the Treasury Department would tell you:

8. Is travel to Cuba for tourist activities permitted?
No. Consistent with the Trade Sanctions Reform and Export Enhancement Act of 2000 (TSRA), travel-related transactions involving Cuba are only permitted for the 12 categories of activities identified in the CACR. Travel-related transactions for other purposes remain prohibited."

So, Royal Caribbean is sailing from Miami, and delivering tourists illegally to Cuba.
If you say so....

Some of you nit wits can't read or stay on topic.. This thread is about visiting Cuba with family/two teenagers..It is not about the politics of the place..

Also it is apparent that some of the most disparaging remarks come from those who have never been there..

Nothing illegal about providing transportation from Miami. But, if you go to Cuba as a tourist, you are indeed breaking the law(not Royal Caribbean).

It seems pretty pertinent to the topic that it is illegal to travel there as a tourist...and why. Unless you are interested in both you and/or family members in breaking the law...and helping a ruthless dictator stay in power (just to satisfy your vanity).

Note that tourism is illegal...while there are quite a few ways to travel there legally, tourism is not one of them. You may well be able to get away with breaking the law by lying, but that really does not seem like a particularly way to take a family vacation (trains kids well) and even forbid that younger the one that is selected to be the example. Personally, I find it better to set an example for my family as a law-abiding citizen. Rather than believe an article, If I wanted to vacation there, I would read the law vice an article written by a journalist (in a finance section) who writes for Playboy magazine. https://www.treasury.gov/resource-center/sanctions/Programs/Pages/cuba.aspx

Just to be clear, OP never stated his nationality. It appears that Americans can't visit as tourists, lots of other nationalities can.

I live in Michigan. I can legally visit Cuba as a tourist if I choose to.

I never will. But I could.

I believe Cuba does not stamp your passport if you ask them not to....

I would not expect that there are a lot of multinationals in Dalton GA (but you never know). That said, if I were to ask advice about vacationing in a foreign country, if it were illegal to do so, that would be the very first thing I would hope someone would tell me. Many of the following posts are misleading and false (claiming it to be legal).

Yes, it is quite sad that other nations and their citizens have not supported U.S. efforts to end the brutal regime and restore civil rights to the citizens of Cuba. I guess their tropical vacations are just more important to them.

You would have to make your own mind up about the politics. I have been there twice and it was fantastic both times. Some of the world's most beautiful beaches, fantastic friendly people, very interesting history and some great architecture. The food is not bad, just bland and that is getting better. Some of the best ice cream I have ever had.
Both vacations I had there were very pleasant, I really enjoyed the Cuban people, fantastic to talk to, amazingly positive.

And Fint, you know very well the US government could not care less about the fate of the Cuban people, the embargo and trade restrictions were never about the populace at all. Were it not so strategically significant average everyday Americans would never have even heard of it.
