Did you watch the driving videos?

As we used to say about 930 cars, the thing "barks."

I have a soft spot for Saabs. I had a 900SE and 9000 Aero, both of which were a 2.3 with the high pressure turbo. With just a manual boost controller they were both highway rockets. Around town they had crazy torque steer, which wasn’t so good. The hatchbacks were huge inside and just weird enough to be cool.

We have a 2005 V70 2.5T. It’s a run-of-the-mill “throwaway” Volvo. I love the car, though. It was purchased for $1300 a year ago at 155,000 miles. I gave it some much needed love and maintenance and it has been great. Compared to the BMW 520iT it replaces, it is a rocket ship. Now at 160,000 miles, it just transported me and 11 crates of fine Belgian beer back to Stuttgart. It can swallow an inordinate amount of $#!% and do it in comfort. Unlike its German competitors of the same age, mileage and price range, it remains rust free and the leather hides used in the interior were from hardy Scandinavian cows with thick skin. The interior of this thing still looks new. My only complaint is that it is an automatic, which is a first-world complaint about driving pleasure. It’s turbo seals are on their way out, so this will be addressed in the not-too-distant future. Otherwise, it serves its purpose well.

The current Polestar version of the S60/V60 makes 362hp and is impressive for a 2.0L 4-cyl. The full-on Polestars are special, with the Ohlins shocks and all. I liked the ones that had the 3.0L 6-cyl with the smoother power delivery, though. I have a T6 V90 Cross Country which performs well, but more importantly drives really well- some say it's the nicest driving Volvo currently offered and I agree.

The 2011-2013 C30 manual transmission with the Polestar software really ripped. I remember burning rubber for like 50 yards in 2nd gear once. I leased a 2017 S60 T6 AWD with Polestar software and it would get up and go. Had a 1980 SAAB 900 Turbo and I think it was only rated at 130hp, but it felt much stronger than that- must have been the torque. I remember we looked under the hood after a nice run and the turbo was glowing orange like the cherry on a cigarette. No intercooler, no water cooled bearings. I babied that on start up/shut down and the turbo still blew at 49,000 miles- just in time for the emissions warranty to replace it for free. It had the Inca wheels like in speeder's link. Soft wheels- I bent 7 of them...

My nephew has a V50 T5 that is pretty nice. Kind of a cult car I guess. Has the same engine my brother's V60 had in it, and that car went pretty good for a 4-door sedan.

I'm trying to help a friend sell his 1978 Saab 99 turbo right now.

Saab 99 Turbo - 1978 project
Saab 99 Turbo - 1978 project

In it's prime of yesteryear:

As it sits today:

Should be a hoot once it's put back together.

Has original Inca wheels (magnesium)
Original 4-speed upgraded to 1980's Saab 900 5-speed
Oversized Turbo (water cooled) with custom intercooler.

I'm shopping for a V70R, V70 T5 (P2 or P3), or V50 T5.

It seems like there is a lot of car to be had for under $10k.

I've been trying to find the downside, suspecting they're maintenance hogs or fragile. . .

We have a 2010 V50 R Type AWD
We found a used one with 13.000 miles on it.
Right now it has 105,000 miles.
It runs strong and get 28-31 mpg on the open road.
The R Type has some sporty body trim and carbon fiber look trim on the interior.
It took us a long time to find a V50 AWD with the Turbo 5 cyl.
We like wagons and didn't want to get a SUV.

My wife has a 2015 T6 S60 Polestar in passion red, Looks great and YES it hauls ass. Great car, and Haldex AWD to boot. We've had it since new. I grab it from her whenever I can. Man is that thing a sleeper.

My only complaint with it has been how you can feel the engine move under heavy torque during acceleration and shifts...I put in some Powerflex polyurethane engine mount inserts which greatly improved this.

I owned 5 Saabs...classic 900 4-door, 2 9000's, NG900 coupe, and a 9-3 Sportcombi - All turbos. Fun cars, I miss them a lot.

Kach that 99 Turbo restoration looks awesome, I would love to have one of those someday.
