Overhaulin 356
 

Did anyone see this? I watched chip foose and company take a 356 and completely ruin a 356, my opinion of course.

It's not that bad. (But the wheels are awful) It's just another outlaw, tastefully done for the most part. I prefer 100% original, but I wouldn't kick that car out of my garage for leaking oil.

Old show, prolly 10+years. It was a pretty rough car to start with. Foose is pretty clear, he doesn't do restorations. Many end up being monuments to bad taste IMHO but I'd support the owners right to do what he wants with a car that otherwise would live out it's days slowly returning to the earth, with 40 lbs of bondo over crumpled & rusted body work with rattle can paint.

It's good to see old 356s in rough shape being restored, whether it be to perfectly stock original perfectionist status, or outlaw. I always prefer the hotrod approach, and to see some different ideas about what "cool" is.

Foose always seems to have the same recipe for the cars he gets ahold of, but does a good job within a short time frame rebuilding cars that would have been forgotten/junked otherwise, so what is the problem ?

I’ve seen worse, I actually dislike the bumpers more than the wheels. Change a few things and I would like it.

I have said before and will reiterate, I would be some kinda mad if someone somehow did a full Chip Foose Overhauling on my 1986 El Camino. The same formula that is used in so many TV shows, Giant 20inch or bigger wheels, slammed to the ground, insane stereo, and cut the bumpers back and tuck them up next to the body to make them useless as a bumper.

I still bet in 20 years there will be shows fixing all those messed up cars and putting them back to more normal cars. But I could be wrong.

And get rid of the gawdawful graphics.

How do you guys feel about the split window? Maybe it's just me, but rod Emory must've thought that it was so far from an outlaw that he would churn out from his shop

My first house was in the hood, I was the only white guy on the block. The guys across the street were always working on cars. They would buy low riders for cheap, convert them to stock, and make big $$$ selling them as "classics".

Saw a Foose creation at a Mecum auction a few years back, Rust bubbling up everywhere. Maybe 2 weeks is not enough time to do proper bodywork and paint? Those artificial pesky TV show deadlines......
This 356 is not my thing but with reversal of a few items, would not look too bad.

As I mentioned in the other threads this project showed up in, I don't hate it, I don't think he ruined it. If memory serves, this thing started off in the worst possible condition...might even have had a tree growing through it. I'm by no means a "factory-nut-bolt-purist", but I do prefer the subtle style of the Emory and Willhiot "outlaw" 356 cars (as mentioned in the other 356 thread going around). I could have done without the oval window, and the rimz aren't my cuppa. And the bumpers just don't look quite right, to my eyes, especially the front.

Interesting to hear how Chip's work "held up" (or didn't) at that auction...
