Pelican Case or ?
Need a mid-size Pelican type of case. Do you buy genuine Pelican brand, or the various "looks like" brands, and why?
|
I own a half-dozen or so Pelican cases in a variety of sizes. If I need another such case, unless it's for something of low-value or I don't expect the case to do much more than store something on a shelf, I'll definitely go with another Pelican.

Depends on what you are going to do. For example I have a $10,000 muzzle loading target rifle that lays in the back of my range vehicle and it has a home made sleeve and gun sock inside it. If I were to fly to a match somewhere I would want a case that is airline approved and lockable. We have some guy that come out to the range and their cases are like a status symbol so remember the idea is to protect the gun.

Does it really need to protect the item inside? Then yes, get a Pelican case.
Is it just to make carrying convenient but you really don't need to protect the item? Get a cheap knockoff. They both have their purposes IMO. |
Pelican cases are really nice. We have several that we keep valuable equipment for the company stored and protected when not in use. Hard to beat the quality of them.

We have about 20-25 Pelican and Storm cases
Get the "STORM" case. Storm and Pelican are the same company and both cases have a great warranty, but STORM has button-latches that just work better and give you a more positive feel and a much better method for replacement of said latch if it goes bad. Punch out the pin, get fresh latch, hammer in the pin. Great stuff. |
I have a Case Club case - from Amazon, that I use daily in my car.
2.5 years of bouncing around the back of a Yukon, all is well. Nice product. |
It'll be used for my growing videography hobby, so will hold videocamera, mics, sound recorders, cables, tapes, drives, headphones, etc. Each individual thing is fairly cheap ('cuz I am fairly cheap) but I suppose the total kit will eventually be about $1000-1500. I think I'll get a STORM on your recs. Going to measure and figure out needed size. Thanks PPOT!

Take a look at Pelican's new lower cost Vault line.

Even Horrible Freight sells Pelican-type cases (Apache). I have Pelicans and have looked at the HF cases and see very little difference, other than cost.

It really depends on how you plan to use it. I have $3k in camera gear and I prefer to keep it in a camera backpack for both international travel and ease of use out in the field. Mine is a Lowepro that I have owned for 20 years but there are many others. https://www.lowepro.com/us-en/
I also have several cases for astronomy gear including Pelican and OEM. Pelican is the most robust and also the most $$. To me it shouts "high value theft target" so I rarely travel with it, but a very nice case. The backpack just suits my shooting style better and leaves both hands free. I prefer to travel light so the less gear I need to hand carry, the better. |
