Adrenaline Medical Trial
KC911's thread reminded me of how lucky we all are and how lucky I am, really sorry for your loss KC
![]() Last summer I unexpectedly took part in a medical trial ![]() Normally I have little time for surveys or questionnaires but this was too important for me to say no to. The PARAMEDIC2 medical trial looked at whether adrenaline is helpful or harmful in the treatment of a cardiac arrest that occurs outside of a hospital The results may change 50 year old world protocol for how out of hospital cardiac arrest patients are treated ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() For the full report https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/med/research/ctu/trials/critical/paramedic2/ The numbers are quite sobering, especially considering I was 20 yrs younger than the average age. Always thought working in F1 is like living life in dog years, working 1 year is like working 7 years outside of F1 ![]() If I've done the math correctly out of 8016 people, I was 1 of the 54 or the 0.067% extremely lucky few able to carry on with life as it was before dying ![]() My outlook to life hasn't changed much as I've always been a 'get on with it' type of person' but I now put family and my own project's priorities before work priorities. Work for me is still important as I enjoy it and it pays the bills but sometimes it now has to wait for me.

With only 2.7% surviving to be discharged from the hospital after an event, you definately were one of the lucky ones. It could have had to do with your younger age, and better fitness level though.

Nice of them to experiment on you.
I’m sure you signed a waiver, right... Anyone else still want socialized medicine? |

![]() If anyone else wants to PARF up this thread then go start your own thread. More than happy to discuss medical ethics of be being a lab rat or my and other peoples cardiac arrest experiences but I'm not interested in discussing politics ![]() LOL, just realized one aspect of my life that changed since dying is I've become even less tolerant when dealing with idjuts ![]()

If no learning happens on either side within a few posts you let them go on with their ideas, and you go on with yours. A decent trait to have outside a work place. For me personally, I've developed a guideline not to go past three posts per day on the same subject with the same person if no change is taking place either to my own knowledge, or their apparent knowledge. Coming back from a heart attack explains a lot of that, you can't fix all the "wrong" so just move on and wrench on the bolts that aren't rusted. However, I have also noticed that one person's perception of genius can easily be another person's perception of idiot. |

To clarify that last line, I sometimes try to remind myself that perhaps I am the idiot, but I'm just not smart enough to realize it isn't the other guy that is the idiot.

The aspect of this forum that keeps me coming back to PPOT is that the threads cover such a wide spectrum of subjects. Every time I visit I've learnt something from knowledgeable experts, people's experiences/knowledge Thankfully most members respect there is a section for expressing political views and keep their comments in there so apologies if my abrupt retort was deemed a bit harsh and it was not aimed at all idiots. Just to clarify I didn't start this thread for it to be derailed and used to broadcast someone else's political views. You have one more post left for today, use it wisely Yoda ![]()

Interesting results.
For me dead is more desirable than severe impairment. Deleted the PARFY response that answered the question "Anyone still want socialized medicine?". Time and a place for everything. Interesting that so few heart attacks occur at work where where you see the first response defibrillators hanging off the walls next to the first aid kits. Made me curious to see how much a packaged AED kit is worth but have no idea as to the longevity of such a device or how often it requires testing or service. Skimmed a NYT article on this which stated that home AEDs provided no advantage but statistically, it seemed their sample size was quite limited. Glad you were one of the lucky ones Cap.

Here is the frustrating part of using this data.
What if... Those that survive with impairment would have died without the adrenaline? But some of those that would have survived without impairment died because of the adrenaline. The human body reacts so differently to the same treatment from person to person. Even with the result of this study suggesting not to use adrenaline, there still might be cases where a survival was dependent on it. Very difficult to truly parse this fully. It would seem, that without further knowledge that not continuing the practice would be in order. I just have to wonder the "what ifs". |

The 2.7% number is surprising. Does that mean 97.3% did NOT survive? I had no idea heart attacks were that fatal.
