traffic light wiring questions
I have purchased a three light traffic light for the exterior of my man cave . It is currently wired like a lamp , you plug it in and all 3 lights come on . I want to wire it so it lights/works more like a traffic light . I have done some research and a sequencer will do the trick for the lights ........... however I also want the light triggered by movement day or night . So a motion sensor of some sort will be needed .
The searches I have done so far lead me to believe that motion sensors ( at least the ones I see ) are triggered by human motion and darkness . I do NOT want the lights to come just due to darkness , I want them to come on day or night when triggered by a person walking by or a car driving by . Any suggestions ( links ) to motion sensors that can do that ? I would prefer to mount the motion sensor on the bottom of the traffic light . The bottom of the light will be aprox. 9 ' from the ground . If need be I can also mount an electrical box on the wall near where the light will be installed and a box mounted sensor could be used . The light will be hanging off a 2 ' roof/overhang in between the garage doors and will be about 2 ' from the wall . I have a duplex receptacle on the outside and I'm going to drill a hole in that box and run conduit/power wires from that . I've got this all down in my head except for the motion sensor . |
One more thing :D I only need the motion sensor to provide electricity for each motion event for maybe 60 seconds or so . I would setup the sequencer so each light comes on and stays on for 15 - 20 seconds each .

I have a motion sensing light (typical of the HD ones) that is incandescent (but you can use any type sensor with its appropriate lamp) and the daylight override function went on the fritz. So it comes on day or night if triggered. That tells me that there are 2 functions going on in that little hunk of plastic with the translucent lens. I'm sure you can buy a dedicated sensor like one for an alarm, but you could cannibalize one of those lights if you have one on hand.
Another thing to consider: the light I mentioned has a timer built in as well. Mine is 1 minute, 5 or 10 plus a test function which turns the light on during the day. What else could you need? |
Raspberry Pi, the GPIO pins, some programming knowledge, some relays and a soldering iron...

The motion sensors for your inside lights don’t have photo cells in them

Get an alarm motion sensor. Should work anytime not just dark.
Also yellow light should be on for a much shorter time than the green or red. I would want it to come on red, then cycle thru green, short yellow, then red again. |
