brake question
 

My 2008 Subaru Outback has 120K miles on it. Lately I have noticed that the brake pedal seems to engage the brakes noticeably later in its travel when the car is cold and earlier when it's warmed up. I flushed the brake fluid in it yesterday thinking that could be part of it but the issue did not change. Seems odd. Is this a sign of something (?master cylinder?) beginning to fail?

Was this sudden or over time?

How old are the pads?

As the pads wear, the pedal engages farther and farther down. Replace the pads and the pedal will engage higher (after you've compressed the pistons to get the new pads in)

Does it change when the engine is warmed up, or when the brakes are warmed up?
If it’s engine I would look into the brake booster system.
If it’s brakes I would guess a rotor is warping when hot.

First thing I would check would be if a caliper slide pin was frozen, or sticky and or if the pads are stuck in the caliper brackets .

pads and rotors are relatively (under 18 months for each) new. The change seems to be related to engine temp. I started to notice it within the last few months but it could be a long term issue that I just began noticing.
