GM 8.1 Harmonic Balancer - 496 - How to Install?

Anyone know how to install the harmonic balancer? It is not keyed and a apparently an interference press fit?

I don't think you can heat the balancer, I don't think dry ice on the crank alone will do it, not sure how to press it.

I'm asking for a friend, but we are both stumped.

Never done one on an 8.1 , is there a threaded section in the snout of the crank? They've been doing this on other engines for years now. I have a tool that threads into the crank, and pulls it in.

That's a GM tool, I assume?

That one is, but I have a generic kit that does them all . Ill loan it out if you need it. It is the correct way to install any pressed on harmonic balancer

Usually I put a big bolt in it and use greased washers to stack under the head to push it on, that or
All thread in the crank snout, with a thrust bearing and a nut to drive it on, it helps to warm the balancer with a hot plate.

Got it. Thanks for the help.

If you don't have the fancy tool, I'm sure this would do the trick.

What I always did as a kid. It worked, as far as I know.

Without a keyway, etc. how do you keep it from moving?

Or is it so tight, it just won’t move?

I believe the interference fit prevents slipping.
